Has anyone tried the E-3 Sony earbuds for monitoring? I am looking for something that allows me to hear by steel and other band members while going direct to the board and listening thru a Behringer headphone amp.

I have not used the Shure E-3's, but I tried the E-1's and they were pretty shy on the low end. I went to the Shure E-5's (expensive) but they reproduce the lows much better. I have used in-ears for a couple of years now at the church where I play and really like them, but, we have a sound man that knows his stuff and knows what I want in my mix. This is a must for in-ears to be successful.

All that said, someone on a pro-sound forum suggested using Koss earbuds, available at Radio Shack for around $30.00 per pair. I bought a pair just for kicks, and wow, they are a close rival to the Shure E-5's soundwise. They are more cheaply made, but you can buy 10 or 15 of these for the price of one set of E-5's. They are definitely worth a try.

Thanks for the info Darvin. I have discussed this problem with my steel sound with you before. I will check out the Koss earbuds. I have another question. Tell me if I am plugged in the best way possible. My steel goes to Profex 2 to direct box routing to the board. I then have the headphone amp with phones to hear myself mixed in with the piano, vocals and bass sent from the board. Should I go from the direct box into the board and the headphone amp (without my steel in the mix)and then mix my steel in with the headphone mixer section. The HP amp has an imput for an instrument and a feed and then has a balance type control for blending the two inputs. What is your opinion?

Thanks for your continued input with my unending questions.

James

Hi James, I should have remembered your name. I think it would be a good idea to be able to balance your steel and the rest of the music in your earphones. The Shure wireless unit I use has this capability and I do have to make slight adjustments occasionally.

Darvin, Do you know the Model Number of the Koss Earbuds. RadioShack.com lists a set for $9.99, all others listed are Radio Shack brand. I thinks I will try splitting my steel between the headphone amp and the board, maybe that will work better.

Thanks for the info.

I forgot that Radio Shack sells them under one of their names, but they are made by Koss. Their stock number is 33-1167. They have the Optimus name on them. The catalog I have shows the price at $19.95.

Darvin, I tried running my guitar, (testing with a Gibson 335 and RV5) into the board and going from the direct box HI-Z outlet to the HeadPhone amp. That worked great with the headphones. I picked up a set of those Koss/Optimus earbuds and they are awesome on a cheap "Jambox". Get those dudes in tight and you have enough bass to shake the fillings out of your teeth at low volume. I am going to test again tonight with the earbuds. If all goes well, the Zum goes with me Sunday. I am ordering another Behringer HP amp for the other side of the stage so everybody will have the same set up I have.
Thanks a million for all your help. I will let you know how it goes after Sunday.

James

Sounds like a good setup James. The wire on the earphones is a little wimpy and the mute switch kind of got in my way, but for the price they are amazing. I keep a pair in my pack-a-seat just in case my E-5's go down. I wish I had known about them before I Bought the E-5's.

Good luck

Darvin, I played steel yesterday with the Radio Shack/Koss Buds. They are great. The Behringer Headphone Amp works really good when it is used correctly. Many thanks for all your help in getting this problem fixed. I have been asking questions for 6 months trying to resolve the issue. You my friend solved the problem. The new HA4700 with tone controls is in and I will install it this week which should make things much better. I currently use the 4400 series(no tone control version). Thanks again for you help.

The Radio Shack / Koss Ear Buds (33-1167) were $21.95 at the local shack this weekend. Ha, It's the only place in the world where electronics increase in price!

That's what I gave for mine as well. They are darn well worth it in my case. I had stopped playing at church because I could not hear my steel. I am amazed that R-S has something that good.
