I've been offered a Music Man HD 210 combo for not too much $. I understand they are 130 watts and pretty powerful. Anyone out there used them for steel? What about fitting them out with a single 15" speaker for steel? The cabinet is in bad shape and needs rebuilding anyway. I believe it has a 4/8 ohm switch so that a 4 ohm speaker would work.
Any comments or opinions will be appreciated. Thanks, John

John, In my opinion the Music Man amps are among the best there has ever been for steel guitar. And I also think using it with a single 15" speaker is the way to go. I have an '82 model 150 watt with a single 15" speaker that is still my favorite.

Very good steel amp.As good as anything out there. I miss my HD 130 head.. [on the steel,I did not like it as well for my 6 string guitars].. DUMP the 10 in. speakers! You won't like them for pedal steel. That amp is quite small. I would take the speakers out and use it as a power head with a good single 15 cab. bob

Thanks guys. Anyone want to venture a guess as to what a fair price for this amp might be? Looks like I'll just be cutting the amp down to a head and dumping the 10" speakers anyway.

Good shape they for for upwards of 450 or 500.

Heads are going for around 350 in good shape.

Hope that helps. The 130 are not as popular because they are so darn loud, which makes them perfect for steels.

DO not pass this amp up.. If it is any sort of reasonable shape go get it and bring it home.

The price of approx 4 to 500 may or not be relative as these are very rare amps, hard to find in any shape..

I don't recall them bing 130 watts but they sure sounded like it..I would have though maybe 85 watts like the early Twins.. I worked thru one ( not mine ) for a short period in the mid 80's and it was really a treat..This guy in our band had two..I played Tele' and Steel thru it and loved it.. I tried to buy it but he moved out of state and took it with him..the creep...

I would buy one of these or the 1-12's in a heartbeat..if I could find one...

John,If you wouldn't mind posting what kind of deal you are getting on it maybe the feedback could get a little more specific.

Larry, I can buy the amp in the $325 range and I think that sounds reasonable based on the feedback I've gotten here. Condition is fair, but it works fine. Thanks for all the help.

Here's the follow up and a funny story.
I bought the amp for $325.
You guys are so right. This amp is great through a 15" speaker. Very warm and punchy as well as powerful. Sort of a mix between the Fender and the Peavey tones. It is 130 watts and has a switch which can be set to choose 4 or 8 ohms. Plugged into a 4 ohm BW it will take your head off. I like it and it's a keeper. I plan to cut down the amp to just a head and lighten the unit without the 10" speakers(useless for steel).
As for the funny story, when it rains it pours. I had no sooner bought this Musicman when I stumbled across a second identical amp! What are the odds? Anyway I offered the owner the same amount that I had just paid for the first amp and he's going to let me know this weekend if he'll sell it for $325. I think they are great sounding units and I'm not sure I need two, but for this price I'll go for it if he'll take the offer.
If anyone on the forum wants the extra amp, drop me a line and I'll part with it at my cost plus shipping. Condition is somewhat better than the first unit, but 10" speakers look shot.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for all the advice. Right on the money.

I have a MM HD130 212 and it sounds great for both Steel and Guitar, much bigger and fatter sound than a Twin. I have a Weber Cali and Chicago speaker in it and it sounds great. I have tried various 15 inch speakers with it and none sound as good as the pair of 12's. 2 12 inch speakers move more air than a single 15 and give excellent bottom end response. Mine does a whisker over a clean 100watts on the scope. A very loud clean amp....IP

I have two of the HD-130 2-12 amps. One with JBL F-130's and one with EVM 12L's. I have had mine since the early 80's. Mine are like new (road-cased always, and not used that much). I thought about selling one or both, but alas, I keep going back to them because of that clean MM sound is hard to beat with a tele and a little delay. Good for steel too. With a 15" it would be great. Those are really rare.
Very reliable also. Good deal on the amp.
I have heard the 130's were the best (particularly with tube preamp).
I plan to keep mine.
Good luck.

Looks like I'm the proud owner of two matching MM HD210's. I'll work on cutting down the cabinet on the more beat of the two and give it a run in the club soon. Looks like the Peavey will have to move over for the MM.
Again, I'm not sure what I'll do with two HD210's, but if you desire one I've got a spare to share.
