This is one hard to beat amp; power, versitile, rugged, clean, stylish, etc. I do run a Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp into the front end, but that is just me. The amp really kicks butt all by itself.
You could buy a wall of ____'s for the cost of one new Webb 614E I know, but I would still take one Webb. I wounder what a wall of Webb's would sound like? Maybe even just 4 of them.

I'd have to be starving to get rid of mine!! They certainly are special. Even though mine is an old timer, it just kicks royal ass!!! |

Larry...you are so correct about the incredible sounding Webb Amps. Not only are you a wonderful steel player, but you know a great sounding steel guitar amp! Lots of good sounding Peavey's, Evans etc, but the Webb just suits me the best.

Bill, I would think that if you use all of this into about any amp it would sound really good. and you are so right about Larry's playing (Great).

The Webb 614E is truly worth hugging. I have owned a boat load of amps, but the Webb is the very best and worth every penny.
I believe I'll go hug mine again. |

Golf2 you are correct about your comment above about the items that Bill has going into an amp, you will have an edge because the gear is great. But with the Webb it is a razors edge. The more I compare the Webb to other amps I have used the more I come to appreciate what Jimmy Webb did for all of us so many years ago.
I had two close steel player friends that had Webb amps, they sounded like crap. When I told my wife I was looking at trying one she about disowned me. In less than 3 minutes I "found the sound". I did not accept the setting others used as I new that was where I did not want to go.
I still look and compare, I might even get excited, but in the end when I listen to strings 3-5 and how solid they are I just sit back and smile.

Golf2 this is for you:
66 PP, Hilton, Boss SE70, Boss Compressor, Bosstone, Ebow, BJS bar, Blue thumb pick, chrome Dunlop finger picks, Geo L cables, PV 1501DT 4 ohm speaker in the Webb, and a ton of expression and soul. Don't you just love the sound. I wish it hadn't taken 30 years to get there.[This message was edited by Larry Behm on 17 January 2004 at 09:28 AM.] |

In the last few days I have been reading several Replies to a few different topics such as:
Have you hugged your Webb today?
WTB/Webb 614 amp
Webb restoration
I hope all of you Authors and Repliers had a good Christmas and bring in a Happy New Year. I would like to reply to all of you individually but there is not enough time.
I do appreciate what all of you are doing for me and the Webb Amplifier.
Thanks Again,

It is all about the speaker. I tried several quality speakers in the Webb they all sounded different as we might guess. I keep going back to the 1501DT 4 ohm as it seems to give me the best all around sound from highs to lows leaning toward the upper midrange.
The Webb can be dialed in to make any speaker sound good, but to me the more drastic the tone changes needed the more I question the match between the speaker and the amp. Just me. Any other thoughts?
I just sold the MBSP and am going back to just the Webb. Most versitile steel amp you will ever find.

I have just aquired an older Webb 614E #1155 with a K 130 JBL in it which I don't really like as it is alittle honky in the mids, very efficient though, blow your head off with minmal power from the amp.I tried a PV 1501-4 SB and it was better, certainly smoother. Then I tried an Eminence Deltalite 15 and wow, the sound really opened up, super smooth from top to bottom and no honk. I am going to do the caps on the amp as per Brad Sarno's replacement list which should make this amp something special. Anyone not quite happy with the soumd of their Webb, give the DeltaLite a try, It has the added bonus of reducing the weight of the amp considerably...IP

Steven. I get mine here in NZ from the distributor at a reaonable price. I noticed a post fairly recently of a Forumite with a pair for sale. Do a search of Buy & Sell. They are a very nice speaker, well worth a try....IP

Talked to Jimmy Webb Friday he said the JBL speaker is about $375 and the Eminence speaker he has made for him is about $140.
I am still open for speaker options.
