My son is considering a Roland BR1180 home recorder, (and I don't have a clue!!:eek ---says it can do a lot. Has anyone out in Forum land had any experience with such equipment? Pros? Cons? What's your favorite home recording system? Is the Roland BR1180 a good value for the money($1200 new list), or are there better toys for less bux? Thanx in advance!!

I don't own one personally but have used one and they are fantastic if you want a great sounding all in one unit. The best feature is the VERY easy to use and intuitive icon based controls. I think they go for about $900 new with a built in 20gig hard drive and CD burner.

The sound quality is very high end. This is the unit I would buy if I were to get a single unit digital recorder. Some of the other units out there can have a pretty steep learning curve to get proficient with them.

James, I have a Roland VS 1880 for sale here on the forum ($750 shipped). It has 18 tracks as opposed to 8. It does not, however, have a CD burner, but you can get one for about $125.

I have the BR1180CD unit and I love it!!!!
I upgraded from the BR-8 and that was great too, but having the extra features of the 1180 + the C/D burner built in really make a big difference for me.

James, these units are indeed very fine, for there intended purpose. I too have an older BR-8 and recently upgraded to a much more powerful unit of a different brand, but the BR8, which is replced by the 1180 does a fine job and it is a fine tool.

Keep in mind that these units ( 1180's) are intended for a single musician to build tracks one at a time, they do not record multiple channels at the same time. But..they are extremly easy to use and the results are pretty darn good.

Are there other units out there comparable? Oh yeh..For the price these are pretty nice and offer some very nice on board features and effects.

If elaborate multi channel recording at the same time is a requirement then this may not be the proper recorder for that need.

Also very appropriate advise above as well..

good luck
