I'm building a Tele, but I want a Strat pickup in the center for a little more versatility. I saw mention in Ralph Denyer's The Guitar Book of a combination rotary switch that has enough positions that you can select any pickup, any two, or all three. Anybody know where I can get one of these, and what it's called? Stew-Mac has a "Super Switch", but it didn't sound quite like what I "need". Thanks! |

I built a guitar and custom wired it--designed the wiring but since there's only so many ways to skin a cat I found that my scheme was hardly unique. Straight-up Strat switch and a mini toggle. The toggle turns on the neck PU(3) even if selector switch is in 1 or 1 & 2 position. Got fancy and put in another toggle to reverse polarity of #3. And a pull pot for series/parallel on a bridge HB...got carried away. Spent way more time playing with the switches than playing the damn guitar. Sorry this doesn't directly answer the question but the mini switch is one way to get there. |

I removed the stock switch and installed 3 individual mini toggles, one for each pickup.
Works out well. |

This has nothing to do with a Strat switch, but I use the bridge and both pickups much more than the neck. So I took the switch out of my Tele reversed it and now the bridge pickup is up on top where I can get my fingers on it.

A couple of other options:
1) Make the tone (my preference) or volume control a push/push or push/pull pot that gives you either the neck or bridge pickup when it's "on". This will give you all of the pickup combinations and retain the stock appearance.
2) Either make the tone pot a "blender" pot or add one. This lets you use a 3 way switch for the pickups and blend in the middle pickup. You can get all of the combinations.
3) Use a 5 way switch but reverse the connections for either the neck or bridge pickup. This won't give you all of the standard 5 way selections but will give you the choice of the B/N combination.

I have wired several starting in the early 70's with 3 minature DPDT Toggles with a center off position. Up on the toggle for out of phase Down for in phase. Works very well and gives a lot of combinations.

Thank you all for giving me some ideas. I've got plenty to mull over. I kind of like the idea of one switch to do everything, but maybe I don't have to have every combination under the sun. I appreciate your accumulated wisdom! |

Jerry Jr. here......
I know about the rotary switches that you are talking about. There is one called a Fat-O-Caster and another called the Chrome-O-Caster(it gets all the colors). The site I saw them on was http://deaf-eddie.net/.
Hope this helps. |
