Hi all,

A friend of mine has an Evans FET-500, and the sound from it is amazing! I have spoken with a dealer that mentioned that there is a new line of amps that Evans has out, some with digital reverb, some with Celestions (I believe), etc.

Has anyone bought or played through one of the newer Evans amps? How do they compare to the older Evans amps, or even versus the most recent Nashville 400, the 1000 or the 112?

Joe

Hello fellow Hoosier.
This thread I started was on Evans in general, old & new. Maybe there's some news you could use. http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum11/HTML/003733.html
Had a chance to try out a new one, but right now I'm too busy & don't need 2 steel amps.

is what you are looking for!!!!

My Evans FET-500 (#8487) is wonderful - that's the amplifier I'd carry out of the house if we had a fire! If you want to hear how clean you're playing (or not!), this is the amp you need.

RR
PS: Of course, I'd save Susie first, THEN I'd go back for the Emmons and the amp....

I have number 8385 sounds great. I like the Evans FET 500LV so much I traded a Webb for evans number 950222a and some boot money! My 8385 has a Black Widow in it. The 950222a has a JBL K-130-4 in it. I prefer the JBL to the black widow. But both amps sound great!

Does anyone know what the cutoff date would be on those built by Darrell?
Just curious.

David,

That's a good question.....
I know Derrell personally and I will ask!

The newer Evans amps are not even close in design to the Derrell Stephens years.

The FET's have all been changed and of course thats where the difference is
in the pre-amp.

Why would you change something as good as the Derrell Stephens Evans???????????

I have one of the last amps that Derrell built
and it shipped in late July 1994. The Buffingtions also sent out a company takeover letter July 1994.

Where do you guys go for service on the older Evans amps? I have one from the mid 80's (85??). I'm not having any problems with it, but would like to know someone who can work on them if needed. I've wanted one for a long time and finally found a used one earlier this year. I could not be happier with the amp, just what I was looking for.
Thanks

Kenny,

There is a place in Indianapolis called "Uncle Albert's Amp Repair" which I have heard is one of the best amp repair places in the midwest, if not the country. Repairs are done by Kevin Silva.....if I ever have a problem with one of my amps, I know that'd be the first place I stop.

Bob..... your time frame on the Derrell Stephens made Evans Amps agree with what I know about my Evans Amps. I purchased my first one 5/17/94, but it has S/N 8913 SE. I still have the paper work for it. I also have 8933 LE, purchased in 1991, and 8947 SE purchased in 1994. I appears to me that the Amp Chassis were built up and shelved until an order came in. Then the Chassis, Cabinet, and Speaker was then assembled? and the S/N's were NOT in any particular order. Not long after I recieved my Amp in May 1994, Mr. Ed Buffington purchased Evans from Derrell, about the time you say. I later wrote Derrell and asked him if he had schematics and other set-up procedures for the Amp that would be helpful to me IF I ever had to repair the Amp. He sent me schematics and set-up instructions shortly afterward, which I though was very nice of him. I have NOT had to work on ANY of my Evans Amps so far.
I have both Small Enclosures and Large Enclosures. Both SE's have 15" Evans Eclipse Speakers and the LE has a 15" JBL K-140 Speaker. All 3 of my Evans Amps sound GOOD to me. I also have a Fender Twin 2 12" Fender Speakers that sounds pretty good too.
There are a lot of good Amps on the market, but the Derrell Stephens made Evans seem to have a better sound to my ears, than some of the newer one do......in my opinion.

I think Joe's last question was, "has anyone played through one of the newer Evans' amps" or something to that effect and how do they compare to the older ones. I have 4 Evans amps of different vintages. I must say that I like the newer Evans with the Fane spkr. The amp also has a headphone jk which I use religiously on stage while tuning amongst the noise of other musicians doing the same. I hope they never discontinue that feature. I have a 1996 FET 500 but don't know if it's LV or HV. Also have a '99 SE200HV. All are good amps but the newer ones are the ones I'd haul out of the house first in case of a fire.
