I have this notion, that if I can find a Fender tube amp with 2/10" speakers and install 2/10" JBL's and a reverb, it would be the perfect amp for my Hawaiian playing on my Fender guitars and my Rickenbacher.
Can anyone speculate about how much this conversion would cost, and how much the Fender amp would cost?
Many thanks, Rick |

Here's an idea...
Find an early 90's Fender Vibroverb Reissue. They can be had for $500-700. Brown cosmetics, tilt-back legs.
Replace the speakers with the JBL's if you can find 10" JBL's, or go with Weber California Series Ceramic 10's with Aluminum Dustcaps....
Do you have a line on 10" JBL's????

Depending on your volume needs, also check out the Vibrolux (either a reissue or the older models). These feature 40 watts through two ten inch speakers and are great sounding amps.
These typically go for between $500 and $900.

I think that a Fender tube amp with 2 10" JBLs would sound pretty bright, especially with a Fender steel guitar. If that's the sound you're looking for, fine, but I wouldn't want to be in the front row of the audience!

Find a silverface Fender Vibrolux! That's what you're wanting. Great amp. Avoid the reissues!!
Funny to hear this discussion today. Yesterday in Branson at the OSGA show, Johnny Cox was playing his new blue MSA Millenium thru a Walker Stereo Steel rig into a 2-10" speaker cabinet. He said they were high powered Celestion 10" speakers. His tone was very impressive. I was recording that gig for SteelRadio.Com so I kept soloing up his amp in the headphones to really give the guitar and small speakers a close listen, and it was a great sound.
People think of 10" speakers as being perhaps thin or small sounding but as a pair or quartet they get really fat. Vibroluxes sound pretty warm and deep. Fender Super Reverb amps sound very fat and warm (4-10"). Johnny Cox's tone was quite warm and balanced. Even the low's of the C6 came out full.

I don't even know if JBL makes a 10" speaker for instrument amplifiers. Right now, I'm playing my Fenders through a Webb 6-14E. This is not a bad sound, if I set the selector switch on #3 with the bass on about 8 and the treble all the way off; ___no EQ.
...just looking to experiment with a different sound.

Like Bob, I always though a 2-10 would be too bright. I think with JBLs Bob may be right on! I use 12" and 15" JBLs and other speakers in my collection of amps. The JBLs tend to be pretty bright! Weber has some great 10" speakers that might be great for this application. I use the Mojotone Black Beauties in my Bandmaster clone cabinet (2-10 enclosed cab) and four of them in a 1964 Super reverb I just restored. They are a nice sounding speaker and handle a lot of power.
I agree with Gino, the Vibroverb reissue would be a dandy amp! The Classic series by Peavey may be something else to look into. They have a graeat tone.
One of the most impressive tube amps I have heard in many years is the Peavey Triple XXX (2-6L6GC power tubes) with a single 12"! I think it sounds better than any new tube amp that I have tried in a lot of years. It's tone was even better than the Triple XXX with 2-12" speakers (4-6L6GC power tubes).
So many amps! It is worth taking a little time to play through a few before commiting.

I think that the 10" Tone Tubby Alnico speakers would probably sound richer than JBLs. |

Well it depends on which JBL models your talking about to wheather they are too bright or not.
Also I've never seen 10" JBL's(either D or K...the real ones)...but the E-series made all kinds of stuff...ya never know...and it's the E's that sound bright...yuk...or a re-coned JBL alnico..will sound harsh and bright...as they are reconed with E kits...
But the warmth and full range of a real D or K original JBL.....is to die for....and are not bright....they are just what you dial them in to be.....
I had a vibrolux from the '70s and it had the original 2-10" Blue backs in it...and it sounded awesome with all my Fender steels I had at that time.....

If you buy a fine Vibrolux you won't have to change the speakers in it. They sound great as they are.

My first brand new amp was about a 1970 Fender Vibrolux that I ordered with two 10" JBL's. I guess they don't make 10's anymore, but they did back then. |

The ten inch JBL's are the D-110 these were the Alnico speakers like the D-120 or D-130. They also made an eight inch version it was the D-216.
The D110's are hard to find but I did have a BF super reverb that had four of them in it. They do sound great with tons of tight low end and clear highs.

After reading these replys, wonder what a Peavey Nashville 112 would sound like with a 12" JBL,or a Tone Tubby speaker? I think that they are putting Blue Marvels in them as stock. Correct me if I'm wrong. |
