Bought a new Goodrich Volume Pedal. I could not afford the new fangled style and bought a potentiometer style one. The tone/action was great but after ONE MONTH it is scratchy as all-get-out and unusable.
The dealer who I bought it from says that Goodrich will not warranty the pot-style pedals, and offered to take back my pedal for trade-in on the much more expensive version, though he would not give me full value..... I cannot afford that right now.
Can I find a reliable potentiometer for this unit??
Man, I feel like I have been royally scammed.....

I'd call Goodrich directly. If this happened within one month, I'll bet they'll replace it for you... Let us know what happens!

I bought a new Goodrich 120 two years ago and the pot is still fine. They don't wear out that quickly. My guess is that you got a defective unit. Contact Goodrich right away!

Considering the 120 is pretty much the "STANDARD" I would contact Goodrich directly and I think they will do the right thing.

I too have been using one for 2 years..no issues.

What kind of a warranty was this 'dealer' supposed to provide to you as a customer? ONE MONTH????? I don't think so. I'd do two things (1) call Goodrich -- they value their reputation and would never let this go unfixed and (2) stay away from that dealer from now on and explain to him that buying stuff from a dealer usually means the dealer going to bat for you with the mfgr. to make you a satisfied customer. This person must not understand the value of treating the customer right to get repeat business. Maybe you could help educate him.

... not to mention, if you go directly to goodrich (I called goodrich one time about a question on one of their pedals... phone answered on the second ring, very courteous, thorough response), Goodrich more than likely will say something to the dealer, or at least keep an eye on them. Most mfr's dont' take too kindly to their dealers giving poor service

Word has been out for a while now that good pots are hard to find. But while I don't for a second doubt it, I replaced my pot a couple of years ago and it was and still is fine. In other words, it's not a lost cause.

Grant,

I had the same problem a few months ago. The potentiometers are at fault, not Goodrich. Mine lasted about 6 weeks before it sounded like sandpaper.

I am sure Goodrich will help you out. Also, George L's sells the "EJ" pot replacement.

Seems like the pots either work for years, or weeks.

The other guys are right...buy elsewhere if the dealer's not interested in at least checking the thing out!

There are unscrupulous sellers who will take the "good" pot out of a new pedal, and put in a "cheapie" $3 pot. Then, a month or two down the road (when the cheapie goes bad), they'll sell you the same pot they took out (the pot you've already paid for)...for $25.

Ten minutes' work nets them $22. Not a bad profit when the business is slow!

Donny's comment above suggests a verrry interesting idea: When you DO call Goodrich (which obviously you must), ask them to tell you exactly what brand and type of pot they put in their pedals. Then see if that's in fact what you've got in there. If it isn't, I'd say the dealer has more than a little to answer for!

I agree with all the above posts and I'm not sure who the dealer is you bought it from, but I would definatly call Goodrich and they will help you...We are an authorized dealer for them, and they have always treated us great...If you need further help, call us and we will be glad to help you...

The Goodrich 120 is a workhorse and shouldn't fail. I got lucky a couple years ago and scored one used for about $35. Near new condition. I had an Allen Bradley pot from a few years ago when they were cheaper and it's worked great for at least two years and going strong. I don't work the thing too much anyway, that may extend the life of the pot.

The pot issue is a serious one and let's hope the George L's brand are OK. Any comments on their pots?

I realize the new pot-less pedals are great but I don't want to hassle with yet another thing to have to plug into my power strip and the extra cord cluttering up the stage. The pedal steel is too cumbersome already with all its peripherals and that damn amp. Less is more!

(Sorry 'bout the rant.)

When I got a new Goodrich L-120 a few years ago, the pot never, or almost never was noise-free. Being new to steel, and not really knowing the score on pots, I put off calling anyone, thinking maybe it would get better.

When I finally called the dealer and was directed to call Goodrich, I believe I talked to Ollie himself. Not very far into my story, he unhesitatingly offered to send me a new pot. He asked for no details whatsoever, and was very nice about the whole thing.

I got a very favorable impression from the way this situation was handled.

Call Goodrich : 231 893 5702. They will take care of your problem. They just overhauled an older Steeldriver 111 for me that I have had for years and the cost was very nominal. Best regards, Jody.

Bought an L-120 about a year ago and I'm now on my 3rd. pot. So far so good on this one. Contact Goodrich.

Wow.
Talk about bad customer service.
I just got off the phone with Phillip Goodrich who simply said "take it up with your dealer".
He had absolutely NO interest in my problem, and did not want to be bothered.
I am terribly disatisfied with the dealer, and Goodrich. Looks like I'm saving up for a Hilton.

Philip Goodrich is Ollie Goodrich's father.

Philip is the inventor and designer of the all the Goodrich pedals and products.

Goodrich does not watch the Forum or have internet access at this time.

I just talked with Philip Goodrich (as the above post from Grant surprised us) and Philip says he totally misunderstood the situation and would be happy to replace the pot (or you can send the pedal to Goodrich and they will fix it).

Philip says he has tried for the last hour or more to reach Grant Johnson but the numbers from Information do not answer.

So, Grant, here is Phililp's message to you:

Thanks to Ann Fabian and all who helped.
Mr. Goodrich was very helpful on my second call and we definitely had a miscommunication earlier this morning. They are sending me a replacement pot... The clarostat pots are a big problem according to Mr Goodrich, and this one must have slipped by their QC....

It sounds like "the situation" he misunderstood was that this was being discussed here.

I wonder how many other callers get the "take it up with your dealer" brush off.
