Topic: Speaker size for a 1 6L6 power tube amp? |

| I have a 1961 Voice of Music reel-to-reel that I want to use as an amp for my lap steel. I hooked up an 8" no name 8 ohm guitar amp speaker and it sounded great and pretty loud. I was wondering if maybe I could go with a 10" 8ohm spkr. It came with a 8ohm 6X9 and a tweeter but has a 1/4" spkr output also. It has 1) 7591 power tube equal to a EL34 or a 6L6, 1)5Y3 rectifier tube, 2) 12AU7's and 2)12AX7's preamp tubes. It says 117VAC, 60 cy, 125W but is this the output rating of the amp? |

| Probably an 8 to 10 watt amp, Wayne. A 10" speaker should be just fine. In a class "A", single tube configuration, the tube is rated at 11 watt maximum. The 125 watts refers to the the AC power drawn from the wall outlet to powr the amp. |

Do you have tone controls? If not, you'll want to pick a speaker that has a tone you really like. I like Tone Tubbies, for example, but they sound pretty dark if you don't boost the treble on the amp.
I doubt that you'll get enough bass out of a 10" speaker. I'd use a 12", and try a bunch of different ones before making a "final" decision.

| I have tone and brilliance what ever that is.That doesn't offer much so the advice to pick one that sounds good knowing you don't have much leeway makes sense. |

"Tone" is probably a low-pass filter, and "Brilliance" is probably a high-end boost. You'd want them both on "10" if you used a Tone Tubbie.  |
