In general, what difference should one expect in sound between single-coils wound 20K vs. 18.5K? |

Thank you, Mike! I greatly appreciate it. Yes, it is for my 78 Emmons push-pull (I realize the year of the guitar makes it obvious to many that it is a push-pull )
I currently have a 705 in the E9 neck and it is coming out of there! Too Thin!
My first Emmons push-pull was a Black 1980 that I purchased from Bobbe and it sounded so good. He thought it probabaly had 18.5K pickups in it. Emmons guitar sells 20K pickups and are willing to make me 18.5K pickups. They think that 78 Emmons guitars had 20K pickups in them from the factory.
I just doubt any humbucker will make me as happy as a single coil.

All other things being equal, Frank, there would be very little difference...I doubt you would even notice it in a band situation. In the studio (or your home practice area---bedroom), maybe. |

Just my opinion. Tone wise, I think very little difference with only 2000 ohms DC resistance. Possibly a slight increase in body. I think it's more important to have the same resistance on both necks (providing) you have a double neck, so that the only difference in volume would be due to the string guage difference between C-6 and E-9. I say this because I shorted out a pick up and had it rewound to 17.5 K ohms DC.
resistance. The other pickup was wound to 20,000 K. There was a big difference in volume between the necks. Of course by opening up the volume foot pedal the difference could be voided. I have since then had the pickup rewired again, back to 20,000 K. (The volume difference just BUGGED ME). Hope this helps. But if you are asking about tone, there would not be a whole lot of noticable difference. (Boy, am I long winded!) Oh, BTW, I don't think any humbucker sounds as sweet as single coils. Speaking of single coils.
Jerry Wallace - TrueTone Pickups.
Try one. You'll love it.

Thank you for all the good advice. I plan to have both of my existing pickups rewound the same. |
