The folks at my local music store called recently to tell me that the new Traynor 15 watt tube amp had come in. I went in today to try it out. I didn't have my steel so I tried it with a six string. The features are tube preamp and power amp; two channels, lead and clean, with gain and volume on each channel; effects loop; reverb; master volume; 8 ohm 12" celestion speaker; bass treble and mid tone controls; weight 35 lbs. It has plenty of bottom end. The clean channel has tons of headroom. The lead channel has lots of crunch. It appears to be built like a tank. My son has a 80 watt Traynor that he plays guitar thru and its solid.
About $525-550 out the door price.
This sounds like a sales pitch but I just like the amp.

The Traynor stuff is pretty cool but that's a LOT of money. You can do way better. Look into the little Fender stuff. They've got a cool line of little tube amps.

I bought a used Crate VC-508 as a birthday present for a friend of mine and have regretted it ever since. I should have kept it. Best $70 I ever would have spent.
Five watts. 8" speaker. Volume, contour and gain controls. EL84 and one preamp tube. It came with a 12AX7 and I swapped it out with a 12AU7.
Why, oh why did I give this away?

I've got a Traynor ycv80q 4x10 all tube amp, as my main steel amp. Somewhat less expensive than a (less powerful) Super Reverb, quiet, tone for days, built like a tank...Did I mention how much I like this amp??

I think the best small tube amp for steel guitar in the bedroom and studio is the Fender Deluxe Reverb, but then you're talking major dinero. I haven't played steel thru a DR Reissue yet but based on it's guitar performance, it's not the same amp. The BF and SF DRs can sound very, very good in a studio situation. It's tough to get the lows, high end sparkle and fidelity (low distortion) out of a cheaper 'entry level' unit.

Whatever you do,play your steel thru it before you buy,I have a Vox 30w/210s that sounds ok at low volume, but falls apart when driven,it is ok for headphones/low volume tho...
