Mike,
I have "many" Peavey steel amps of which a favorite of mine is an old Vegas 400, ser. # 3A-01547298. After many years of use, I'm afraid the old 1502-4 speaker it came with is "going south." Is there still an original type speaker available for this amp, or would you recommend replacing the old 1502-4 type with the newer 1501 "Shallow Basket" type? Would the newer 1501 "SB" type change the sound of this already great sounding amp? If so, how? Being a steel player I'm naturally "picky" about my sound.
Like I said, this amp came with the 1502-4 originally and not the 1501DT-4 type like in my Session 400 and Nashville 400.
What is your recommendation to get this great old amp back up to running condition again?

Thanks!
Dave

Dave, just my 2 cents worth, I have replaced several of my old Vegas baskets with the 1501-4SB-RB and it improved the sound for steel to my ear. The 1502-4RB is still available as a bass guitar speaker basket. (I think)it probably has the kevlar cone, and it was found that the paper cone sounded better for us steel players, I'm sure Mike will set this straight if I'm wrong!

Dyke,
thanks for the info. I really like the sound of my Vegas with the 1502. I swapped a 1501 into a Vegas for a friend some time ago and he really seems to like the sound of his now. I was really hoping to keep my amp as much like original as possible, and like I said, it really sounds great with the'02, but I was afarid that I might not be able to replace the existing speaker. So, if the only thing available was the new '01 SB then so be it, I would go for it.
Dyke, what particularly did you notice about the change in the tone?

Dave, the newer 1502-4 cone is made of the KEVLAR material and I've found that it sounds too "midrangy" for steel. I highly recommend the 1501-4 shallow basket as a replacement. I have known a couple of players who didn't have a problem with the way that the 1502-4 sounded, but it is not the same as the pre-KEVLAR cones.

Dave, to me less mid range and a much brighter sound. I have had some people tell me they like the 1501-4 better than the JBL..
