In the rack unit I have, it appears to be a pair of 12AX7's.

Tom,

I'd recommend trying different 12AX7's in the Blue Tube. I think you'll find that the tone of your amp will vary greatly according to the type of tube you use. You might be happy with the stock Sovteks, although they're generally regarded to sound kind of thin and sterile when compared to others. Of the new 12AX7 available, the Electro Harmonix are really nice and I like the JJ/Tesla as well.

Vintage tubes are definitely the way to go. I've had really good luck in buying vintage tubes on eBay, and my amps sound great with Telefunken, Mullard (some relabled), Brimar, Sylvania and others. NOS (new old stock) tubes are available and kind of pricey. One good choice in a reasonably priced NOS tube is the JAN Phillips 12AX7. They have a very rich, round sound. And remember, you don't need to buy matched pre-amp tubes for a guitar amp. Only the output tubes need to be matched.
