Does anyone play one of these 8 stringers? It's the Little Roy Wiggins model. |

I had one. Nice piece of maple but the lipstick pickup was too small for 8 strings plus the string spacing was too tight for me (I play a lot of Dobro). Also cheap tuners and bridge. Your mileage may vary. |

I have one, but never play it. I've thought of getting a new (and better) nut/bridge made with wider string spacing, changing the pickup, and wiring in a tone knob (mine only has volume). I agree that it's a nice piece of wood.
The spacing is smaller like on a pedal steel. It would probably be more ideal for a pedal steelist wanting a practice lap guitar. |

A Gold Tone 6 string lap steel is a better deal, from Elderly for around $300. It has a 25 1/2 inch scale. An 8 string steel guitar of another brand will be in the $500. price range.

I have an LRW lap steel and play it all the time. True, the PUP is a little funky on the bottom string, but that aside, it's a neat guitar. |

Check out "West Coast Steel"...some of the nicest lap steels around and high quality construction. I think the site is http://pedalsteel.com/westcoaststeel/ I have the Hawaiian version and very happy with the quality!

I have one and had asked on another thread about improving the tone of the lipstick pickup. Some of the responses gave me some good ideas including adjusting the the pickup height, adding a DI box (I have also been using a Matchbox to alter the tone)or replacing the pickup. The simple adjustments all helped and make it sound OK although I may eventually change the pickup or add a second one. As someone also noted, I like the string spacing since I switch back and forth with my pedal steel. I think for the modest price tag it is not a bad deal at all. |
