What kind of sound effect does Tommy Detamore use in the chord solo at 2:00 – 2:20 on “Beatiful Texas sunshine” on Doug Sahm´s CD “The return of Wayne Douglas”? It sounds like a crossing between a steel and a Hammond B 3 to me. Does anyone know?
It sounds quite nice, doesn´t it?

I don't know what he used, but he used it very well indeed. That is one of my favorite CD's. I don't think I've heard any better steel anywhere. Didn't mean to clog up your post, but Tommy deserves lots of praise for his effort on this great recording.

It's a Leslie and it's being switched between chorale and tremolo (slow and fast) which is where that change in speed is coming from, most likely they took the track and then fed it back out to the Leslie. |

Everything that increases my knowledge about sound effects is welcome, because - in a decade or two - that might make me able to get more out of the soud effect boxes I already have had for years, but never have managed to handle. It´s actually frustrating for a half-old man like me.
Maybe some no longer young Forumite can recognize the feeling, when a kid teches him complcated basics about pc:s. I have very mixed emotions about pc:s and processor based effect boxes, but I like to use them anyway.

Anders, thanks for asking. This "steel through a Leslie" sound was something that Doug wanted me to do on that song. Luckily I had taken pretty copious notes outlining what he wanted on certain songs. They came in real after he passed away leaving the album 70% finished.
I took the track and ran it through a Hughes and Kettner Tube Rotosphere and bounced it to another track while switching the Leslie effect between fast and slow. I guess I could have done it "live" but I didn't have enough feet to hit the switch

Hi Tommy!
How nice of you to take part of this thread! That CD is one of my favourites, and your great picking on it is one big reason for that. Iwish I could play just a fraction of what you do! (Well, in fact that might be exacly what I do, on a closer thought.)
I get goose bumps when I read your description of creating that Lesley/steel sound, but I calm down when I think of that in a year or so, there´ll be some new effect box that can do that even if I´m fubling behind the knobs.
Doug was a very talented musician and also a good non-pedal steel player. I remember once, many years ago, when he was in Hedemora here in Sweden, when he played my old AWH D-10, changing the tuning with the pegs instead of with the pedals! And he played quite good, I must say!
Back then Larry Campbell from New York (now in Bob Dylan´s band) was Doug´s steel player/fiddler/guitarist, and he´s quite a good steel picker too – far better than me, anyway.
By the way – do you have the G# to G lower on a lever, since you´re so fast on it on that that CD? I have it on the pedal to the left of the A-pedal, (my copedant is at http://groups.msn.com/countryfolketidalarna/dcmcsfotoalbum.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=91 ), but I think it would be better to have on a knee instead.
