When dealing with a 48 point patch bay, what do terms like "normal, half normal, open and parallel" mean or what would be a possible application for each?

Thanks,
Ken

Since nobody's touching this one. The whole purpose of a patchbay is so you don't have to patch all the time. The top row on the patch should be outputs and the bottom row should be inputs. This is the standard. Say for instance that the top 24 jacks are the output of your 24 track, and the bottom 24 are the inputs to your console. You would have this normalled in the back of the patch, instead of using 24 patch cords to hook everything up. Inserting a patch cable into a jack breaks that normalled connection. A half normal would let the signal from the tape machine continue to the console even if you have plugged a cable into the output jack, effectively splitting the signal. Parallel jacks are what I call a mult. Its 4 jacks side by side that are all connected in the back. It allows you to take one signal and make three. Open means no connection between the top and bottom row. This is a real basic explanation BTW. It only gets more confusing!

Thanks Russ, Glenn and Mark. I believe I have enough info to get a good start on this thing. This thread can be closed.

Thanks,
Ken
