I'm playing an old Sho Bud Pro through my '68 Twin Reverb and as much as I love Ricky Davis' tone, I can't get mysself to do the 15" speaker swap, I also play Tele through the same amp. I'm looking for an amp with the warmth of tubes, loud and hopefully lighter than a Twin. Sorry if I opened a can of worms.... |

Twins only feel heavy when you don't have something of equal weight in the other hand.
Just add a 15" extension speaker to your set up.
Keep adding weight to the ext. cab untill the drool runs equally out of both nostrils.
Rinse and repeat!

Nothing sounds like a ShoBud through a Twin, and I know what I´m talking about...
As somebody said (I don´t remember who) "You only have to carry it for a few minutes, but you´ll get to listen to it all night!" |

Fender Vibrosonic. It may take a while to find one, but it is worth the "weight". If you want a tube sound then get tubes. Solid state has its own sound but you can't ask it to be tubes. And I urge you to use a D or E series JBL if you get that amp. It weights a ton but sounds great. I have played mine next to both Peavey and Evans and...

Joe, for my first 10 or 15 years of steel back thru the 70's and 80's I played my Sho-Bud Pro III thru my 65 Twin with the 15" JBL. I also doubled on Telecaster. Many of my friends used to come by our gigs and all where totally impressed with the Telecaster thru the twin with the 15. I don't have the Sho-Bud, I don't have the Twin and I don't have that Tele' anymore .I now have a Carter, N1000 and a 52 RI Tele. And what I also have is a problem getting a good Tele tone with the amps that I am using. I don't like the Tele' thru the Peavey's..sorry Mike and everyone else.. It's not for me. I would put a 15" JBL in that Twin in a hearbeat..for me it would be a no-brainer. I'm actually considering going back to a Twin..even at my age of 53...

Joe:
Do you have JBL speakers in your twin? I have a twin just about your vintage and ordered it with the JBL speakers. I don't think it could sound much better. I'd sure hate to start carving it up to put in a 15" speaker.

I put a D series JBL 15" in my Twin to try with steel and it sounded great with my Tele, better than 12's in my opinion. Mine happens to be a D140, the bass version, but it's plenty bright in a Twin and not so edgy. Keep the old baffle and grill intact and you can always put it back stock.

Joe,There are plenty of great amps out there..Through the years I have used about all of them..
I now have 2 Peavey Session 500's,A Peavey Session 400 and a Nashville 1000..
For me , when its all said and done and all factors considered, the Nashville 1000 is my choice..

I've got the Peavey 1501-4 Black Widow steel guitar speaker in a '69 Twin Reverb. I had a JBL D-130 in it and it sounded sweet and familiar but the Black Widow is a much more refined speaker for steel, at least to my ear. |

Thanks for your support of Peavey products. I think that the "tube vs. solid state" debate will go on for years.
If you haven't tried out our Transtube series of guitar amps, I invite you to do so at your nearest Peavey dealer. Here is a link to our dealer locator function on the Peavey website;http://www.peavey.com/support/dealerlocator/
