Hi gang, a friend just had my JBL D-130 reconed @ 4 ohms in Dallas at Freeman-Tull(sp)and I think he said they couldn't rebuild it with JBL parts. My question is will it sound as good as it did with the JBL kit in it and when did this take place? Thanks for your response,Bill

Since the D-series kit hasn't been made for decades, you are forced to use a generic kit, or a later (E-series) JBL design. And, even if you did find a D-series kit, there would still be subtle differences! Changing the impedance from the original value will have some effect as well, if the speaker is used in the same amp.

Old speakers will sound a little different with any rebuild, but if they used a good kit (and did it right) it will retain most of the characteristics of this old beauty.

You are right Bob, I don't use the whole basket assy, I just order the cone and voice coil from Peavey, It works perfectly in the JBL, Same depth, voice coil diameter,Shim it correctly and presto! A Peav-sing spkr.Stronger too! I have some if you wish to do this. My lessons are expensive though!

Hey Bob Knight, what speaker do you think Peavey patterned the Black Widow after?

The Black Widow was designed by John Gilliam, former loudspeaker design engineer for EV. I imagine there were strong EV influences at work in the design. John had wanted to design a better speaker when he was at EV, a no go! Hartley gave him the opportunity to do what he did best and hence we have the Black Widow.
I was a Peavey distributor at the time the BW was introduced. I got a chance at factory training (for sound systems) just as they were being prototyped. I also got to see the two prototype guitars (T-40 and T-60) that are now in the museum at Peavey. Those were some fun times!!!

I didn't even know EV made a 4" voice coil.
I think all the influence came from JBL by looking at the dimensions. I have been playing a JBL with a Black widow cone for over 6 years now, I think EV spkrs. are great but I do prefer either Black Widow or JBL, this is just an opinion.

I had a D-130 and had generic reconing done. This blew fast. I replaced the speaker with a D-130-F which will accomodate an E series basket, which as Danny stated will handle more power. I dont think the regular D-130's will accept the E basket.
