Any of you who can recommend what to buy
if you want to get that "warm" slide guitar fuzzy, lightly distortioned sound on your steel?

ProCo RAT works for me
Among others, I believe Paul Franklin uses one.

The one I use is a Fulltone Fulldrive 2.
It works best in conjuntion with a tube power section in my experience.
One of those Line 6 Pods is worth checking out. And I think the ultimate thing to use, outside of a funky old tube amp, would be a THD Univalve. The UV has an output so it can be slaved to another amp.

I can't speak to what Paul Franklin is using in the studio, but I have seen him use the Line 6 POD on live shows.
He certainly gets something more out of it than I was able to! I'm still working with my Johnson J-Station to get some similar effects.

Since you don't say what your rig is, let me add--a Tube Screamer type circuit seems to work well with solid state amps. A number of effects boxes are just enhanced TS clones. I use the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive and it does indeed seem to work better with my Evans than with my Fender. This can be dialed in for just some subtle funk. |

Thanks guys, you have given me some food for thought. I normally use a Fender twin reverb with 2x12" speakers for steel and I only need the effects for some country rock tunes we are playing. Everybody is talking about
Profex on the Forum - what do they do and are they good at it?
