I know its been discussed before (I've searched it) but I can only find partial explanations for what type of JBL speaker the letter(D,F,K) or number (120,130) represents. Would anyone care to offer their views on the different characteristics of each of these speaker types. Thanks,Jeff |

Well, let's see....I think the D's were
the old alnico magnet models (no longer
made) & the K's & E's were (& are) the
ceramic magnet ones. The F would be found
after the model # & would mean they were
designed for the Fender amps. 120's are
12" speakers & 130 or 140's are the 15".
Does that sound about right? |

Great info guys, thanks. So I guess I've got the numbers figured out, and I know the D series is the classic "guitar" speaker, can anyone add any more on how the K & E series differ from the D (also I thought the K's were alnico)? |

Yes the original K's were alnico....I have one in my Twin.....and a D in my extension cabinet.
I like the K just a little better for the resistance on the real hard hittin low notes......but other than that;>>>the D and K with alnico maganets sound dang close to the same to me......course mine are both late 60's and "NOT" reconed....I repeat "NOT".......cause then they are not good anymore if you ask me.

I may be misinformed but the D-130 and D-130F do not have the same size throat, and so when replacing the basket an "F" speaker will take na "E" style basket, which will hold up a lot better for longer. IF you want the alnico sound I recommend a D-130-F as opposed to the D-130.

Sometimes I guess it's all in the players own ears as to the tone of the old never reconed and one with a fresh recone.
I think I have 6 Peavey JBL speakers and I had Woody recone two of my JBL'S and I dont know how Woody does it but both my new recone jobs came back souning sweeter to me then they ever did.
As a matter of fact I have a small cabinet Evans with the K JBL I use mostly on shows when I play but tonight SAT-23rd I'm taking my 75 session 400 with a Peavey JBL Woody just finished reconing that peavey JBL. Cant hardly wait to play through it tonight.
I guess we all hear and see things in a diff. way and thats ok it would be very dull if we all were just alike.
