Saw the Steve Kimock Band last night here in Santa Cruz. (Steve is fomerly of Zero, The Other ones, etc)
Some really great fusion material in various time signatures was done, and he played a lot on a 3-neck Fender (stringmaster?)!
A really great show, see him if you get a chance, tone and musicality was first-rate. |

Absolute tone monster. A lot can be learned there in that respect. |

I saw what looked like a Dumble 50watt amp, these are tube-boutique-fender-like heads, really costy.
His stringmaster was huge-sounding. I just emailed his website to ask what tunings he uses. |

Yeah that dumble of his really kicks. You really get to here it in full effect with the older Zero stuff. Man what a sound. Like laser beams. Never heard anyone come near it yet.
Check out two-rock amplifiers up in Cotati. Steve helped with some of the design. I own one and they come quite close to those dumble tones. You can email me for more details if you like. |

Steve's an old pal of mine - we worked together at Mesa Boogie about 20 years ago.
Steve's mainly known as a rock guitarist, but he's also a great rock steel player.
Check out his web site: www.kimock.com

Steve and I were teenagers together in the 60s back in Pa.
He's two years younger. I remeber jams when I was clearly the better guitarist. How times change!
I so glad for his sucess. |

I hope the email I sent his website will bring some info on his tunings, his music is different from what I've heard others doing. |

Steve's tunings are major chords, as I recall. He prefers 6 strings, and I think he mostly uses the standard open G and open E tunings. Nothing strange at all.
But Steve has a very advanced modal sense. He likes odd scales. It's the player, not the tuning, that makes his music sound "different".

The other night he was on a triple Fender, I was a ways back , but I saw at least one 8 string neck I'm pretty sure, although I have 9 strings on my 10 string guitar,
I did knock down a couple of beers as well so maybe my eyes were crossed. ;-/ |

I just got an email back from Steve Kimock, He says:
"The first neck closest to me is A7, just like Freddy Roulette, low to high,
G up an octave, sounding one whole step below the third string. Then two
A's unison, C sharp, E, A, C Sharp, E.
The middle neck has only seven strings on it. F Major just like Mr. Dave
with either the low root or low fifth doubled, depending on my mood...so, F,
C, C, F, A, C, F
The top neck is E7, with just 7 strings. E, B, D, E, G Sharp, B, E. low to
high.
The Stringmaster that I am playing is not a short scale, but it's not the 26
inch long scale. it's around 24, I think. I really like it."
He said " his triple neck tunings were "pretty boring"... I don't think so!
It was very nice of him to take the time to reply I think. |

Glad to see that some in the steel world are hip to this great player. It`s great to get the word on his tunings from the man himself.
The new DVD should be a must for his fans but the only time he plays any steel is in the backstage footage where he`s shown warming up on a six-string acoustic.
