Due to some health problums, i,v been thinking about changing from these heavy amps over to a rack mount system...what about these newer Evans pre-amp with the all knobs on them for the steel guitar on tone? are they better on fine tuneing the tone than the older Evans with the toggles on them? John Hughey seems to get a fine tone with the new Evans pre-amp...let me hear from some of you Evans pre-amp users...i understand too, that John had his Evans up-dated or mod.anybody know anything about this, and do it help on the tone?

The new Evans pre-amp is a high voltage which I don't thoroughly understand except that Evans was building a high voltage amp back 20 or so years ago and changed to the low voltage. Many Evans users believe the high voltage amp sounded better. I also understand that the change to low voltage was due to expense of the hi voltage transistors or some components. Ed Buffington who builds the Evans amps now told me that John Hughey had such an exacting ear that he needed the controls instead of the switches. I believe John turns the depth control almost full on and the expand almost full off. On an amp without switches I believe John had the depth turned on or up and the expand off or down. With the pots in place of the switches he tweaks the depth almost full on and the expand almost off. I put the switches in one of my Evans amps and it does give a little more control of tone but I am happy with the amp with the switches. I believe the new high voltage Evans whether it be the pre amp or a combo is a great amp.
All of this info is just what I understand and may be somewhat misinformation. We have guys on this forum with a great deal of electronics knowledge and some experts on the Evans amps but it was stated above that no informations was forthcoming so I hope my input beats none at all. I have spoken with Bryan Adams, a great steel player, builder and an Evans user and he has a report on the Evans website and states that the new high voltage amp sounds as good or better than his old one. I hope I am quoting Bryan correctly. You could go to the website and maybe pick up some info. I am using a very old double rack space dual channel Evans preamp and it is wonderful. Thanks Jerry for you reply, this helps me a lot on which pre-amp to go to .....i were thinking mabe the Evans or the older RT-924 Tubeworks pre-amp like Herby Wallace uses, ...if i could find one with the steel guitar mod. in it.

I use a Tubeworks "Blue Tube" preamp. It doesn't have a steel mod but from what I understand, it is tailored for the steel. It really does the job for me. Maybe you can shop around and find a used one. I have a full Tubeworks rack setup: the Blue Tube, A Spring Reverb and their Amp. I think it sounds great! Check with Herby. If he is as knowledgable with electronics as he is with his instructional material, he's the man!
