know these are the same amp electronically and speaker wise. Is the tonality much different due to the size of the cabinet?

Hi Ken I have both the LTD and Session 400 and from what I can tell there is a slight tonal difference between the two with IMO the LTD sound better but both are great amps

The '78 Session 400 I use for small gigs is my favorite amp of all time. I assume you're talking about the LTD's of the 70s-80s as opposed to the Session 400 Limited (sometimes abbreviated LTD) which is NOT one of my favorite amps. The older LTD 400 is the same amp in a smaller cabinet -- just barely wider than a 15" speaker. They sound great for E9, but the low end on C6 is a bit thin for my taste. I definitely prefer the Session 400 of that vintage.

Just my opinion.

i have the old session 400 with a JBL speaker. It is a 1976 model and I would not take anything for it. I have played a lot of outdoor shows and it has performed flawlessly except i had to resolder the entire circuit board. Components kept braking loose when the amp was new due to theold dip method of soldering. I play an Emmons d-10 and we play Western Swing and that is loud. The new amps don't have that
quality sound like the old ones.
I am also a Tech and work on amps.

James, have you had the chance to try out a Nashville 1000 yet?

Bill,
I am very glad to hear that you have converted to the Nashville 1000 amp. Don't get me wrong, the Session 500 that you so dearly love(as well as other players) is a great amp also. But, the Nashville 1000's voicing is excellent!

I'll send you the operating guide to the Ultraverb II personally. Sorry about the delay, however it could have gotten lost in the U.S. Mail.

Thanks for all of the input! A friend of mine is picking up an old Session 400 with an original JBL. He was trying to make a choice between that and an older LTD 400, using it for jazz guitar. I have a 1973 that I restored recently. It was missing the speaker, I put in a 1501-4SB. He really liked my amps sound. Hope he likes the amp he's geting with the JBL as well.
