Has anyone else had a problem with the Peavey tubefex frying and smoking like a four alarm fire? Took it to the shop and they said the internal battery cooked also said it would cost around $300.00 just to fix it...What's up with Peavey?

Billy,if the tubefex was smoking like that, its a lot more than just the battery..The battery is small and not capable of putting out enough current to do that..Sounds more like something in the tube circuit to me.There is enough volts/current on them to do some smoking ..The battery is only for memorey backup...

Thanks guys for the info, I've left a message for Mike Brown. Prior to this problem the guys at the repair shop put in a hardwire to get another problem resolved. Could this have caused the short circuit? Naturally the guys at the Repair shop denied this..

As an ex amp tech, anything is possible. But it just sounds like the power supply smoked. Could have been the 12AX7 tube that caused it. Could have been excessive heat (the unit runs hot and needs adequate ventilation), could have been a power surge, etc, etc.

I have a Transtube Fex (the solid state version) and it even runs hot. I have open space around it in the rack and both sides of the rack have an 8" speaker baffle to allow air circulation around the Transtube Fex and a MosVave 500 power amp - and the Transtube Fex still runs much hotter than the power amp. The power transformer is way over 100 degrees in "normal" operation.

JACK - Have you tried to cool the T.T.FX with a regular house fan. I do all the time just to bring the temperature down. I also have my T.T.FX in a rack with lots of space around it so air can circulate.

Ken, My rack case has enough holes in it that it's probably getting enough air. I cut big holes in each side and have a 6" round metal speaker grille on each side. With those holes, space on each side of the unit and the top open, there is a lot of air circulation.

If I felt it was still "too hot", I'd probably install a fan in the rack.

Being a Tube-Fex user, all this naturally got my curiosity up. Last Friday we played from 9 til 2 and I could find no sense of heat on the Tube-Fex unit. It was slightly warm but nothing like the DPC-1000. It usually runs hot as we play at a pretty high level but nothing unusual there either. Saturday evening, I left the Tube-Fex on the whole evening instead of turning it off between sets but there still was no significant heat.

My SKD has a few extra holes in the front where I once toyed around with a different
volume control set-up ( line level stereo.)
but nothing else. The only circulation is the DPC fan and that air flow isn't too hot
either. I don't think I'm doing anything different but it is a curiosity, isn't it ?

Regards, Paul

Billy, thanks for contacting me via e-mail. I'll be glad to assist with your Tubefex should you decide to send it to me at the factory.

My Transtube Fex runs just as hot as my Tubefex.Go figure! Yes I run the tube side of both units.Use DPC-750 power amps.I have 2 of each of these units, they all run pretty warm. However I don't feel they get hot enough to cause any damage.I just assumed the Transtube Fex would run much cooler.-------bb

Billy: When you get your Tube-Fex up and running again, would you post what they found ?? It would be nice to know.

Regards, Paul
