Does anyone know who played steel on the tune He Aloha No O Honolulu from the album "Hawaii's Favorite Slack-Key & Steel Guitar Vol. 2"? Both Gabby Pahinui and David "Feet" Rogers have album credits.
The song lays out perfectly in C6 tuning. My understanding is that Feet played in a D major tuning, and I know Gabby played C6 on other recordings (ie Ry Cooder's "Chicken Skin Music"). The song has the typical Rogers trademark harmonics, with one particular chorus having some of the most awesome (and sweetest) harmonic playing I've heard. In fact, all of the solo steel sections are very inventive and unique.
It doesn't get much better than this!

I haven't heard this particular recording, but Gabby is one of my favorite musicians whether on steel, slack-key, or singing.

Ebb -
Sorry to hear about your father's passing. I went through this several years ago and it is indeed a painful time. You are wise to seek solace in music.
Jeff -
Thanks for the clarification on that tune. I've been working on copying those steel parts and they are not easy to make sound good! They sound so effortless and natural when Gabby plays them.
Sounds like you may know a lot about those Maile Serenader albums. Both volumes have been favorites of mine for many years. In fact, Volume 1 is the album that got me interested in playing steel guitar. I'd been playing slack key for awhile and dismissed the steel as a cornball-sounding instrument until I heard that album. After hearing those incredible harmonics and muted parts along with more folk oriented slack key tunes, I *had* to play steel.
I've always been very curious about which tunes Gabby plays steel on and which Feet plays on. Any more info you can provide?
Mahalos,
Bill
