Some of you may recall Nathan's guitar playing in an around Alberta over the last couple of decades, and in particular all the work he did with various incarnations of Ian Tyson's band. A very fine guitar player. But what I did not know until this past week was that he is also a very accomplished and tasteful non-pedal steel player. He has recently moved to Gabriola Island, British Columbia, where I am a seasonal resident. I caught him this past Saturday night, and thoroughly enjoyed his steel work. Plays a six string C6th tuning on long legs so he can stand up. He told me that the late Ron Dann gave him that tuning, and in particular the use of an F on the low string. Great harmonics, tone, and some nice "Speedy West" flashes to his playing. I hope to hear more of him when I get back there for the summer. |

Thanks for sharing this, Bob. I love Nathan's playing on Ian Tyson's records and I can well imagine what a tasty steel player he must be. I'll look for him when I'm out west this summer. |

Nathan is performing at the Lethbridge Folk Club on Saturday May 15. This is an intimate little club where the crowd size is typically about 50 people. I'm looking forward to it. |

Ian, Nathan does some gigs on Gabriola Island where he lives (20 minute ferry ride from Nanaimo)- sometimes at a little pub called the White Hart right next to the ferry dock. Incidentally, last Saturday Night he was playing at the Gabriola Community Hall with Diamond Joe White - a legendary old country/folkie from Alberta. Bryan, please give my regards to Charlie Ewing when you see him. |

Thanks for the tip, Bob. I have a friend on Gabriola and will likely make it out there this summer (I stay at Sechelt, right across the Strit from Nanaimo). I'll definitely keep an eye out for Nathan. |

Hello Bob. I will pass your regards on to Charlie tomorrow. We get together every Monday to rehearse. We have an outdoor gig playing for the Galt Museum Coalminer's Picnic in Lethbridge on the day after the Nathan Tinkham concert. Then on the the May long weekend Charlie & Arnold & I are teaching at the Acoustic Music Institute's weekend workshops at Kamp Kiwanis west of Calgary. The last time we were in Edmonton, we did a live segment over CKUA radio on David Ward's last bluegrass show, last June. Keep an eye on our web site for future dates: http://www.members.shaw.ca/DirtyHatBand/ |

Bryan, next time the DHB is in Edmonton let me know and I'll try to make it out. Ian, I'll be on Gabriola a good part of the summer I hope - drop me an e mail if you are coming and maybe we can grab a coffee. |

Bob -
I was the MC for the Nathan Tinkham & Keith Picot Lethbridge show in Lethbridge on Saturday night. Then Nathan & Keith came to Dirty Hat Band's show on Sunday. Nathan & Keith then went to their next gig in Nanton. Charlie drove to Nanton & caught that show. It was a hectic, but enjoyable weekend.
Nathan did not bring his steel. I brought up the specifics of his tuning & he was dumbfounded, in that he couldn't recall ever talking to anyone about it. I then mentioned that you had identified it on this forum, and he relaxed, and said that he knew you from your summer stays on the island.
Charlie tells me that you & I possibly met at the Shady Grove Bluegrass Festival a couple of years ago. True?
