My Emmons has been resurrected and now I'm traveling to the Bay Area to pick up my ancient Session 400. It is one of the absolute first ones -- with the metal faceplate.

Were these earliest 400s hand wired or did they use a circuit board? As I recall, they had output trannies despite being transitor amps. Am I wrong about that? It's been so long I've forgotten...

Hi Tom..
I bought a first year session 400 in 1974. I still have it and have been using it since it was new. The 1974s had a mellower tone than all years since then. I am told it was because PV added protective circuitry after 1974. On the bench it will put out an honest 200w rms. I compared it side by side with my 1976 session 400 which puts out 160w rms.
There is a circuit board in the 1974s. I think the boards were the same throughout their existence?
I asked BE about the 1974 400s compared to the ones built afterwards. He also said the first year had a warmer sound than those built later. The 1974's had lifetime warranties to the original owners. I still have my card. Excellent amp. You won't be disappointed.
