On the Jerry Byrd album Hi Fi Guitar (I think that's what it's called) the very first tune starts with this nice 4 bar harmonic passage in C6 tuning.
I tabbed that tune around 14 or 15 years ago but - because I got the tunes off a cassette tape that didn't have the tracks labeled - I never learned the name of it.
For many of you, a lightbulb went on instantaneously. You guys/gals know the name because there just isn't much about Jerry Byrd that you guys/gals DON'T know! ;-)
I'd sure appreciate it if you could name that tune for me.
BTW - since I never knew the name, I always called my tab chart "Flippin' the Byrd." Sacreligious, I know. [This message was edited by Craig Prior on 01 May 2004 at 09:19 PM.] |

I just borrowed this LP from a friend & haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, so I'm not at all familiar with the tunes, but I can tell you that the first song on side 1 of Hi-Fi Guitar is "The One Rose (That's Left In My Heart)," if that's the one you're thinking of, Craig.
Speaking of first cuts, yesterday I was listening to "Show Me How to Do the Hula" (1st track on the LP, Hawaiian Beach Party) and enjoying it big-time. What a fun tune!  |

"The One Rose (That's Left in My Heart"... what an odd name for this instrumental. I can't imagine how those lyrics would fit the tune.

Okay, hold the presses here! Looks like I-- OK, I'll blame the record label-- mis-spoke. I got a chance to listen to this LP a bit today, Craig-- does the title "Sweet Corn" ring a bell? I think that's what you're thinking of here-- it's got the harmonics in the beginning, as you mentioned, and it's otherwise a snappy, fun tune.
I was going off the back of the record-sleeve last night when I said that the first cut was "The One Rose (That's Left in my Heart)." As it turns out, there was an omission/printing-error on the sleeve. The sleeve says that there are 6 cuts on side A, but as I was listening to the LP today, I recognized that the actual second cut was "The One Rose," and that the first cut, "Sweet Corn," wasn't listed. In other words, the sleeve said 6 cuts, but the label on the actual "hub" of the LP said 7 cuts, and the "hub" listed the first song as "Sweet Corn."
As I listened to Jerry's LP, I recognized "The One Rose" from Johnny Cash's cover of this tune on his 1996 release, Unchained. I compared liner notes/song credits on both the Cash & Byrd recordings, and found that both are one and the same as the wonderful Lani McIntire/Del Lyon composition of the same title. So I learned a bit here, too.
Does this make a little more sense, Craig? Sorry about the confusion-- I'm blaming the LP cover! (Altho I suppose I shouldn't be posting at 3 a.m. in the morning when I'm having trouble sleeping...) |

I have the Tom Bradshaw ... re-issue "Steel Guitar Classic Series Vol 1 ... Hi-Fi Guitar" and the first song is "Sweet Corn".
I believe I read somewhere that these "Steel Club" reissues included tracks that were not on the original album ... and something sticks in my mind that "Sweet Corn" was one of them" ????

Hmmm, that's an interesting nugget of information, Rick. Thanks for sharing it! The puzzle continues, though. I'm going off of the Bradshaw reissue, too, and, if I'm not mistaken  , there's yet another "bonus" track at the beginning of side 2 of "Hi Fi Guitar." Can anyone name that tune? |

Its not on the beginning of side two ... its stuck on side one ...
That bounces all the other ones down and it continues over to side two ...

You folks who don't play or know THE ONE ROSE are really missing out on a very beautiful tune. I started playing it in the late forties and still do. It was written in the thirties.
