| Has anyone recorded a CD of Weisenborn guitar music ? Or is there a soundbite available online ? I'd like to hear what this "sweet, harp-like" instrument sounds like . |

You should definitely check out the CD Tone Poems III put out by Acoustic Disc.

It's a sampler of various vintage slide guitars (Knutsens, Weissenborns, Kona, Nationals, Dobros, etc). It comes with a nicely illustrated 48 page color booklet. It's got a nice selection of tunes. The playing by Bob Brozman, Mike Auldridge and David Grisman is very tasteful. It is very well recorded so you can both enjoy the music and listen closely to the instruments.

The secret to the harp like tone of many of the Weissenborn style guitars is in the use of Newtone Aloha strings.
They really allow that quality to stand out, way more than other strings. Thats my humble opinion anyway.

I'm almost finished with my new CD, Soul's Engines, which will have 5 songs with Weissenborn, but I don't know if it's a good example of "sweet harplike" tone. Steinars recordings are amazing for that. My Weissenborn gets a little drowned out by all the other instrumentation and singing, but it's still in there...
I'll work on burning a couple of the rough mixes and setup a link...

Just a little update. It is Sunday 7 a.m. in Norway and Steinar should be finished with that Weissenborn recording any time now.
Here in Denver it is still Saturday night, but I managed to put up a page with some rough mixes of songs featuring my Style 1 Weissenborn.

Here it is,- it is a new recording of Waltzing Elisa for my CD project.
The mp3 is edited down to two minutes to ease the download.
The backing guitar is my Celtic Cross, recorded with the Sunrise pickup through my POD plus with a regular microphone, panned left and right. The melody is also the CC (my Lazy River wasn't sweet enough for this tune), and the harmonics in the middle is my National Dynamic. Sound effect is bowed piano......

| As far as other CD's go, I would also suggest Steve Dawson - his cd Bug Parade or the any of the stuff he does with "Zubot and Dawson" on a Celtic Cross Weissenborn. |

As I expected, your track is beautiful. Those bass notes are so big, if you don't know it's a Weissenborn, you'd think there was a bass player in there. I'm assuming it's the Weissenborn, not a bass, right? |

Dwight - thanks. There's no bass, just two weissenborns and a bowed piano..
Craig - thanks, I've often wondered how much of the Weissenborn 'thing' is hype and how much is for real. But there is a certain mystique to this instrument that is very inspiring.

And don't pass up the "Waikiki Steel Works" CD. All acoustic, played on a variety of Weissenborn type guitars, Tricones, etc. It's nice that the liner notes indicate the instruments played on each track. I love this CD!
