Bob,
there's a great stomp box called the SHO, by a small company called Zvex (www.zvex.com), that is worth checking out. This is popular to put at the end of a long signal/effcts chain to clean up the sound a restore tone. It's a subtle tone thing, but it's a good device, though not as versitle a tone control as the Matchbox. The SHO has a preamp that is modeled after an old Neve recording console preamp, and it gets a good distortion when driven hard. However, SHO stands for "super hard on", and apparently this refers to what it does to the front of your amp (not the listener, although the tone is pleasing). When cranked-up it puts out some hard voltage, and must be used gingerly.

Bob, have you had a chance to try the new VHT Valvulator tube pre-amp? |

I haven't checked out the VHT pre amp. I love the front end sound of there amp heads. It probably sounds fantastic. Right now all my money is tied up in credit card debt so my amp habit is on hold.

Thanks Bob. Maybe some of us should start subsidizing your amp habit - I get a lot out of your reviews (without spending any of my own money).
That pre-amp is pricey but I bet it's worth it. |
