| There was a discussion on this a year or so ago. The consensus was that for low volume gigs it worked well. Too much volume will pull the speaker coil right out of the magnet. Of course running the amp to your existing bass cabinet without using the 400's built in speaker would be the ideal way to go. Turn the reverb off, of course. |

The open back cabinet style is not the way to go for bass guitar applications. The correct porting and a closed back cabinet are best for bass. I suggest that you use a bonefied bass amp for bass guitar applications. You'll come out ahead in output level and voicing characteristics. Besides, the speaker won't be flapping when it tries to reproduce the lower frequencies under normal operating conditions.
A bass amp's equalization circuit is designed around bass guitar frequencies, just like a steel amp is designed to reproduce the steel guitar frequencies. Of course, the actual speaker is the second part of it and it also plays a large part is obtaining a pleasing steel characteristics. I recommend a bass amp for bass guitar, a steel amp for steel guitar(although a guitar works through a steel amp with no problem, but the "voicing" characteristics make these best for use with steel guitar).
