I was digging around at a local electronics surplus store yesterday and found a box full of brand new AB (Clarostat) Type J pots, 250Kohm value for 50 cents each.

Anybody ever try a 250K pot in a volume pedal?

Look at the part number on the pot. It should have a JA1N...... and then a letter or letters at the end. the 500K special audio taper models used in volume pedals is AA.

250K is used in guitar volume pedals. I've never tried one in steel, but I've seen several posts from people with them and apparently they don't work as well as the 500K pots for steel.

It's been my experience that you lose a lot of brightness with a 250K pot.

Jack,
Part # is JA4N056P254UZ
Definitely type J, but maybe it's not audio taper?

No it's not an audio taper. You may be able to find out what it is on the Clarostat web page. I think it's http://www.clarostat.com

I was using one for a while in a passive volume pedal.

You may not notice much difference (if any) as long as you have a buffer in the line (guitar-buffer-passive pedal-effect/amp).

You can definitely hear the difference between buffer and no buffer.
