This topic hasn't come up in a while (I think). What experiences do you have with a 2 X 10" rig? Can you get enough bottom? I don't need rolling thunder but I wouldn't want to lose that essential element of the steel's voice. |

Uh... not to put any nasty ideas in your head there, Jon, but there is a 2x10 and a 4x10 Genz Benz cabinet for sale on e-bay right now. You must have been reading my mind... |

If you were thinking 'what a coincidence'--nope. Looking at it right now. (the 2 X)
If you tell me that I would hate tens then I'll go away. |

Great for practicing at home, or maybe recording. But, for a gig at a club of any size, forget it! Tens don't "carry" very well. You could mic the thing though...in a pinch. |

Jon,
I have used 10" speakers exclusively for about 25 years.
I acquired some old "Blow-Out-Proof" blue spider (Jensens or EV's, I'm not sure) that are the best sounding 10" speaker ever. I have 2 of them in an open back cabinet and drive them with an old Crown D-60. I also have another in an "black-faced" Princeton Reverb.
A lot of "newer" high power rating speakers have very heavy mid-range and poor low & high response.
I currently use a Hartke Kickback 10, 120-watt bass amp as my main amp. It has a 10-inch aluminum driver that has good high end and plenty of bass (it's what it's designed for). No effects... I use all outboard effects anyway. It's very small and light weight (30 lbs.)
Hartke also makes a double 10 cabinet that might work well.

Hey Jon,
I play thru a Music Man 2X10 65 watt amp, and it sounds fine to me, more than enough juice, although I don't play professionally (or even semi-hemi-demi professionally). |

Thanks for the input. I'll take your info under advisement, for sure, Donny.
But I did buy this ebay box--a 2x10" Tubeworks cabinet. Not a bad deal if it sounds good, another piece a junk clogging up my room if it doesn't.
But I'm encouraged by your responses, Dan and Jeremy.
I'll be driving this with a Carvin tube preamp and a Mosvalve amp. I have been experimenting away from the 15" speaker--I like my results with 12" and now we'll see about 10".
In a pinch, I'll have to fall back on an Evans or a Peavey.
(definitely stick a smiley in there)
This gear hunt is getting stupid. Fortunately it's not interfering with my playing. |

I guess I am late here, but I like 10"s a lot. My main cabinet is stereo, with 2X10" THD (made by Celestion) and 1X12" JBL. It is a killer sound, with the combination.
