Vintage Hawaiian steel fans might find this useful.

I created a spreadsheet with the discographic information for all the vintage Hawaiian steel guitar compilation CDs that I own. I catalogued the following albums:

Vintage Hawaiian Music - Great Singers - Rounder CD 1053

History of Hawaiian Steel Guitar - Cord International HOCD34000

Hawaiian Steel Guitar Classics - Folklyric 7027

King Bennie Nawahi: Hawaii's String Virtuoso - Yazoo 2055

Kalama's Quartet - Folklyric 7028

Rhythm Of The Waves - Beer Records

Vintage Hawaiian Music - Steel Guitar Masters - Rounder CD 1052

Sol Hoopii: Master of the Hawaiian Guitar Vol 1 - Rounder

Sol Hoopii: Master of the Hawaiian Guitar Vol 2 - Rounder CD 1025

Waikiki Is Good Enough For Me - Beer Records

There are two spreadsheets. One spreadsheet contains information for all of the albums, but it is somewhat simplified (just song title, artist, steel player, date and label). The information in the spreadsheet was extracted from the liner notes for the albums.

The other spreadsheet contains more detailed information but only for Waikiki Is Good Enough For Me and Rhythm Of The Waves. I created that spreadsheet by processing text files containing the discography for those two albums. I got permission from Malcom Rockwell (the original compiler of the information) and Dave Stewart (of Beer Records) to use the information from the detailed Beer Records discography and make it publically available.

The spreadsheets are sorted by CD title and track. You can use spreadsheet functions to sort the information by song title, artist, label, steel player, etc. The big spreadsheet has 584 entries. I find it very handy and fascinating to be able to quickly sort through and find all the tracks by a particular player/group or different performances of a particular tune.

There are probably errors in the spreadsheets. Don't assume it's 100% accurate. I figured that information that is slightly flawed is better than no information at all.

Here is the link to the spreadsheet webpage. I intend to leave the webpage up until June, so grab a copy now if you want it.

First of all Gary, thanks so much for this info. This was a monumental amount of work. I hope that it can find its way to librarians so that this information has a permanent home. One small error FYI: Raplh Kolsiana's recordings with the Waikiki Swingsters were all recorded at RCA in Camden NJ, not New York city.

Great job Gary!

One question - I've never heard of a steel player named "Splash". Any info?

Come on Bill... You need to brush up on your Hawaiian musician trivia. Splash Lyons was part of the famous Waikiki Beachboys. A reissue of their 1963 live recording was released in the last year or so.

Various artists, Duke Kahanamoku presents A Beachboy Party (Hana Ola Records HOCD 33000) Wow! Hana Ola, a division of Cord International, has brought back the Waltah Clarke 1963 recording of Waikiki beachboys Chick Daniels, Panama, Kalakaua, Fat Kala, Jimmy Hakuole, Splash Lyons, Squeeze Kamana, Harry Robello, Turkey, Ox, Steamboat, and even, singing along with the chorus, Duke himself. This remastered CD was originally recorded on the beach at Waikiki at the Outrigger Canoe Club. You can tell that it was a helluva party! It has the effortless style of something not trying to recapture a long-ago style, but the unselfconscious actual style of the time itself. Songs of particular merit are "Okole Maluna," "Waikiki," and the two instrumentals, "Lover" and "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise," but the whole thing is a party and not meant to be analyzed, just enjoyed. Another excellent job from Hana Ola. BTW, this CD is alleged to contain the only recording of Duke Kahanamoku's voice ever made.!

Some days I feel I should adopt the nickname "Sludge"
