Just heard a song by a Joe Nichols (Farewell Party). Who is the steel player? Great recording. |

The player was Terry Crisp. He knocked that one out of the park, didn't he! |

I'm glad someone brought this up. It is a really nice ride that Terry played.
And I think Joe Nichols is a great country singer. HOWEVER, his cut of this tune compared to the original or AJ's, caused me realize that Gene Watson and Alan Jackson (and our local youngster Brad Williams) are on a higher plane with few others.
Just my opinion...........

Who did the original Farwell Party? For some reason I have it in my mind that it's Little Jimmy Dickens. |

A guy by the name of Lawton Williams wrote the song and had it on the "B" side of a single in 1960.
I don't know when Little Jimmy Dickens recorded it, but his version is a uptempo 4/4 shuffle.
Gene Watson had it on a album in 1978 and it was a big hit for him.[This message was edited by Alvin Blaine on 22 November 2006 at 09:35 AM.] |

Johnny Bush did it before Gene Watson. However, the fact remains that only one singer named his band after the song-- for the obvious reason.

BTW: You didn't hear that one by Joe Nichols on the radio, did you? On FM? That'd be hard to believe these days.

No,I didn't hear it on the radio. Found it on the web by chance. Would like to hear more of his music, especially that steel. |

The Joe Nichols/Terry Crisp version is very similar to the way Jimmy Day played it with johnny Bush ,which is very hard to top in my opinion. Both play over the modulation and Terry did a great job! |

The original Lawton Williams version is also a shuffle, recorded in Fort Worth I think. Dickens presumably was familiar with Lawton's take on the song. Lawton was a damn good singer, but is much better known as a writer--Fraulein, Shame On Me, Color of the Blues, etc. Wish I knew who played steel on the original. |
