I have just endured one and a half hours of the Brooks & Dunn "POP" show. Oh! sorry I've just been informed it was a recording of the "Highlights" of the 40th CMA awards. Well if that's country what the hell have I been listening to for the last 50 years. I saw 1 & 1/2 seconds of what I think was an MSA millenium, I saw a GFI that I couldn't hear, and a third one that was just a silhouette that only seemed to play a couple of passages. There was not a single "Steel Solo," Pedal steel that is, all the breaks were lead guitar with Overdrive, Distortion or one of those effects as was the only steel solo I saw which was on lap steel. As I say we only got 1 & 1/2 hours of so called Highlights from the BBC, (British Broadcasting Corporation) but the majority of what I saw didn't bear any relationship to what I call "Country Music." And it seems to me that Nashville has fell out of love with the "Steel" in favour of Fuzz guitar and more Stringzzzzz. As for the appearance of some of those acts, well I wouldn't go to work on a building site dressed like some of them.
Sorry if this seem offensive, but thats my opinion. Dave.

Dave,

I also reckon that 90% of the 'modern progressive country' is complete rubbish, but clearly a lot of people don't.
It's pure rock music but if the singer wears a hat, apparently it becomes country.
But again, a lot of people must like it so each to their own I guess.
I think it's a shame that the more traditional style of country has been pushed aside making way for some of the cliche crap that is being produced.
Some of the newer songs that are coming out make it really hard for a steel player cause there are 2 roaring distorted electric parts to contend with, but at least it forces a steel player to get imaginative if nothing else.
That's my opinion anyway.

As long as we still have Dale watson we're doing ok though!

Seems to me it's time to move the CMA awards ceremonies to Texas where they still seem to love "Real Country Music."

Amen !!!! There are a few COUNTRY artist in Nashville that have talent. Most are working day jobs and trying to play around town. I was playing with one the other day thinking ......"W0W with talent like this back in the eighties this guy would have been a superstar"...... Take Daryl Singletary for instance. Awesome singer. Country to the core.... New Album coming out.... I never hear him on the radio anymore.... Pinch me if I am wrong. I just love COUNTRY music.....

Funny ting that! I noticed all of the artist that were on the show were making a point of thanking the "Country Music Radio." I don't know what station they were refering to, but I suppose that means that "Country Music Radio" is now playing mostly "Pop" music. All about profit I suppose.

I just have to ask, and please keep in mind that I agree with all of you, but if you thought the CMA's, country radio, or anything else sucks, why didn't you just turn the TV/radio off and put in your favorite cd???

I watched the same "show" last night. There was not much difference with the last five or six years. I don't have a problem with people calling this "country". I completely accept this for a fact. This IS country 2006 i 'm afraid. Anyway, i saw a Sheryl Crow, who is in my opinion a real Popsinger(and one of my favorites), who just wasn't very comfortable with the idiom, no matter how much she would probably like. Proofs to me that there still is quite a gap between the 2 worlds.
I also got the impression that there was way more pedalsteel in the songs than the TV-producers made us believe. The sound was horribly mixed in general, but they left out the steel completely. This was NOT very representative for what the show really was like, is my take on it. We could ask the steelers that were there I suppose. Annoying, as always, was a lot of singing to tape instead of a live-band. Maybe that also explained why most of them sang out of tune, embarrassing.
I didn't turn off the TV because I still like seeing people like Brad Paisley, Gill, Bently, guys that still use plenty of steelguitar in their music. I just wish they hadn't edit it out of the TV-mix.

What I preach to the guys about this new 'chord jumping' songs is, that they vanish in a month and so does the artist. About 6 months ago, working at Billy Bob's, our band leader called up a young, nice looking girl to sing. She said she was from Houston. She sang 'Wind me up'!!! I told the guys that song was recorded back in the 60's and it's still being sung today. Those song had a melody to them. You can't hum the newer stuff to yourself, like when you're driving down the road. That's why they vanish and are never heard of again. No substance.

Nashville labels are pissing off alot of people calling this music country because country music listners know that it isn't. I am thinking of leading an organized protest next year to garner some T.V. attention. I know alot of people would attend the protest.

Protest.......naw.....just spend your CD dollars wisely.

1. Think Texas.......Justin Trevino, Bobby Flores, Darryl McCall, Jake Hooker, Dale Watson, Amber Digby, Johnny Bush, Dicky Overbey, (and from CA, Heather Myles).

2. Support the Steel players that are producing their own stuff......John Hughey, Bobbe Seymour, Russ Hicks, Randy Beavers, Mike Sweeney, Doug Jernigan, etc, etc, etc...I do not need the 'Nashville Establishment'. In fact, they do give a damn about me nor real country music and until they get hit in the wallet, they never will. Just my opinion.

I'm not a country music fan (the old or new stuff...which sounds like 70's pop), but on XM radio flipping channels I notice a lot more steel on the "xcountry" (I guess an alt country channel, although they do mix in some AC/DC and other rock stuff at times...actually becoming a favorite station of mine) and classic rock channels than I do on "Nashville". My observation is based on limited listening and just in small amounts...but it sure sounds that way to me.

Hank (Pell) Thank you very much for the clip you sent me. Now that is County, No such thing as toooo country. Thanks again I think you should share it with everyone. And Ben, your right to mention Curtis Potter, what a singer, I'm ashamed to say the only thing I have of his is with Willie Nelson and of course Mr Emmons is on that album. C.P. is definately on my 2007 shopping list.
Cheers Dave.

So I reckon my CDs may still sell ?

In order for 'lesser' players to grow, they need to be supported. Seeing that steel music has such limited appeal, it would be up to the members of this forum to help keep it going.

Steve...I had forgotten that one, but I was just comparing Xcountry and classic rock channels with the new country stuff. It seemed interesting that the more offbeat, retro and rock-oriented stuff has more steel than "new" country. Willie's place isn't exactly my cup of tea (not that I listen to new country either, but again, it was just an observation based on brief listenings of the ones mentioned)

The name of the game is money to hell with the music,A FEW of the young people know what REAL country is,but most have been indoctrinated, brain washed, and lied to by the socalled musick industry, that they actually BELIEVE that Kenny,Big and Rich,or Cowboy Troy are country artist.Except for a very few rare exceptions[such as Josh Turner],There is absolutely no originality, style, talent, and most of all self respect or class.I'm sure some of you can remember when EACH artist was a stylist with his or her own sound, not clones like today. You only had to hear one word out of their mouth and you knew immediately who they were [no matter if you liked them or not]The great artist such as Hank Sr,Hank SNOW,Roy Acuff,Patsy,Kitty,Earnest,Little Jimmy,Foley,Webb, the list could go on and on.That was the style part. The self respect and CLASS part was their presentation on stage, none of these great artist would have desecrated the opry stage looking like rejects from the Hell's Angels like some artist do today. That is just some of the differences in the REAL DEAL of yesterday and this ludicrous crap that's called country music today.
