I'm wondering what the advantages/disadvantages of soundwell versus post construction in a reso. Are posts more likely to be used in solid wood (as opposed to laminate) construction? What's the theory behind using posts rather than a soundwell?

Thanks.

Besides more volume, soundpost style Resos supposedly have more wood in the sound in addition to the metallic cone sound.

Does anyone know the various schemes of how these soundposts are arranged inside the guitar?

Alan,

I have a Clinesmith, which is a sound post and a DeNeve which has the sound well. The main difference to my ear is that 'sound well' resos articulate between the individual notes better. The 'sound post' guitars are generally more full and round in voice.

A lot of people describe the difference as old-time sounding versus modern.

I like them both used in context with the song.

I've played many of both types and it's next to impossible to categerize because of all the _other_ variables in design between the different builders.

Always play before you buy and buy what you like to hear.

Howard,

I don't want to buy, I want to build.

Alan,

Go to resonatorguitarist.com and they have
a builders section that may be of help.

Sounds like a great project.

Seriously, one guy's "post" guitar may sound like another's soundwell. Then there's the Beard "E" with a carved back and no "guts". A real cannon that.

The new Auldridge guitars are laminate with tuned baffles. The Wolfe has tuned ports! The design variables go on and on.....
