I bought this CD this morning (along with new releases by George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Ray Charles). If you are a fan of classic country like I am, this is a good one to get. It is mostly covers of old songs, but they are done very well. I hope this album sells well, so that more like it will be released.

| Hey David, I got this one too the other day. Great country music. Lots of pedal steel too. Mike Johnson ( a very under discussed, underrated player) is all over this CD. A joy to listen to. Somebody send a copy to Alan Jackson. |

Yes, it is a shame that "Savin' the Honky Tonks" didn't go over well. It is no small wonder that there is not a whole lot of newly-released but classic-sounding music available, when it does not sell well when it is released. I try to buy anything like that I can get my hands on, but there are not many who do.
"Savin' the Honky Tonks" has a Roger Miller song on it called "You Can't Do Me This Way and Get By With It". It is a great song that I had never heard before, and it made me seek out the Roger Miller version. I finally found it on a CD on the Bear Family label out of Germany.
Roger Miller is another person whose music isn't as widely released as it should be. Roger Miller wrote a lot of tremendous songs, not just the novelty stuff like "Dang Me" and "You Can't Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd". Those are good songs, too, but the novelty kind of wears off after you've heard them 257 times. But, sadly, it is the same 10 or 15 novelty songs that get repackaged over and over, and you really have to look to find the other stuff. I do have the 3-CD boxed set "The Genius of Roger Miller", which is great. I just would like to have more. Maybe Bear Family will someday do a boxed set of him. Those Bear Family boxes are very expensive, but they are worth it considering how much they pack into them.

I could be wrong but most times when you
see a familiar hit being remade it is
for the purpose of getting airplay. This
is inexpensive advertising. The artist doesn't get any money for it but it creates
interest and hopefully sales.

Whatever the motivation was for releasing this record, it is one of the best CDs I have bought lately. I hope it does get airplay.
Airplay does not play any role in what I personally buy, though. Since I got XM 3 years ago, I bet I haven't listened to FM radio three hours total (I do listen to AM talk radio nearly every day). Plus, I have a 60GB iPod full of the music I like, so even XM has gotten pretty short shrift lately. Three years ago, I wouldn't have thought of CDs as becoming a thing of the past, but MP3 players are so handy, they are rapidly replacing CDs (I do buy the CD to get it on the iPod, but once it's there, I put the CD on a shelf and leave it there). Something will come along to replace MP3 players, I'm sure. The world never stands still.
