I got this guitar around Christmas time, and I waited till there was some online photos and info on the web.
Here's a few photos from my (new and under construction) website. Carroll Benoit did such an outstanding job on the guitar.

Chuck, you have a one of a kind guitar built by a one of a kind gentleman.
I understand that is a very fine sounding Resophonic (is that politically correct?) guitar.
I wish you much happiness with it.....well, not too much. You cant's sing the blues that way. I just hope it does you right.

| WOW Beautiful Just spoke to Carroll Benoit and just had to see your new masterpiece. Carroll Benoit is going to be at the Texas Steel Guitar Show this week at the Harvey Hotel. Anyone in the Dallas/Ft Worth area this weekend shd make a special effort to see "Benoit's" display - it's always a big attraction, especially with Eddie Ortego demoing Carroll' Reso's. |

Chuck - I too, have a Macassar Benoit. Your's is absolutely beautiful. Carroll told me about your guitar as he was building it, and was really excited about working with you. I don't think anyone can find a more accomodating luthier than Carroll!
About the Blues: Remember - It's not about making yourself feel good...It's about making others feel as lousy as you do!!! (I think that's what I heard on the Simpsons tonight!!!) Wish you were going to Dallas as well, I'd probably buy you a beer. Since you're not, maybe Howard or Larry will buy me one! |

Mike, actually I think you were quite helpful, after we corresponded I got a Superior Weissenborn and determined the shape wasn't gonna work for my position.
The short scale and a lefty-cutaway were both required for me to play anything larger than a lap steel.
Again thanks for the great correspondence and information.

The guitar was tuned to E-13 with a low E in the bass, but initially the guitar was too "stiff" for me, even though the setup was perfectly flat and level. Rather than change the guages and the setup, I tuned it to D-13, and it was amazing , the guitar just "lit up" sonically, got louder, and just sounded blusier. I generally don't like the transposing in D tunings when sitting in "cold" and improvising. But the sound is amazing and I do play D / DADGAD on one of my electric lap steels, and for rehearsed/charted stuff its awesome, later I may get an extra nut/bridge so I can keep this setup and try lighter strings in E-13. But for now I like it down low in the swamp-muck.

Great guitar! I know 'cause Carroll built an 8 string for me a coupla years ago. I'm gonna try your tunings. I've been doing G6.
I spoke with Carroll today in Dallas at the TSGA convention. His face lights up when he talks about the project.

Say, is your E13, from low to high :
E G# D F# G# B C# E ?
I just started on that tuning, and so far, I'm lost, I'll gladly take any hints on how to play blues with that tuning.

my tuning is a combo of e13 hawaiian and Good old E7
E B D E G# B C# E
It can sound like western swing or hawaiian if youre not careful. But the Es on both sides are reassuring.

Well Chuck, I really am stuck with the E13 tuning I mentionned above. So far I've been trying to understand the intervalls in it. I found the standard major minor, 7th triads on it.
I guess I just have to start picking on it and listen to what happens.
Reading the 8 string tuning you indicate puts me in a much more familiar position. I'll try it some day.

The tuning you spell is very close-voiced.
I would think strumable chords would be mushy, only the grips that skipped strings would work well. Its probably fabulous for scales and single note licks, eh? |

That's right, the tuning is not set for strumming. But there is a lot of very interesting triads in it. Well, the more I think of it, the closer I get to quiting it and go to your tuning.
But I'll give it some more experimenting time.
