Is that incredible solo on 'Honky-Tonkin'" that Jerry Byrd does... that moan as the steel break begins... is THAT the famous Ricky moan that gets discussed so much here? I love JBs playing on this song so much. I'm going to check the tabs section just in case....

Thanks!

No the "moanin the blues" and the famous Ricky "moan" are two different things. The moan we are talking about is a sound that the guitar gives off as an over tone AFTER the strings are picked.

The sound you are referring to that Jerry did on sooo many early recordings was done with the tone control. Jerry would pick the strings with the tone control all the way at bass and then just as quickly sweep it to the treble end.

It has also been called "doowah" or "boowah" or "wawaw".

Wow, Carl... thanks for the info! I'm going to have to try the "boowah" out myself...
And I'll keep listening...

Jeff, you can clearly hear "That MOAN" on Sixty Minute Man on the JerryByrdFanClub web site. Give it a listen. It's fairly obvious on this record.
