quote:
Jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, known for his soaring high notes and for his hit recording of "Gonna Fly Now," which lent the musical muscle to the "Rocky" movies, has died. He was 78.

Darn, another one of my mentors gone.
Maynard Ferguson used to come to my high school all the time and show us what we should be doing. Then I got to go to a couple of his band camps in Ojai back around '77 and '78.
I remember one year he showed up with Ravi Shankar and the two of them jammed for ever just going where the music took them. At the time that was one of the coolest things I had ever heard, trumpet and sitar for like 30 minutes.
Every year he would do a concert for the Oxnard School District and helped us raise money for marching band uniforms, sheet music, and other band stuff.
He was one of the greats!
Thank you Mr. Ferguson and rest in peace. |

Saw him in Boston once,
the man had style,
and those high notes were killer.
RIP Maynard, you did good. |

Back in the 70's,when I was traveling w/ Tommy Overstreet,we were passing through Baker,Mt.,& decided to "check-in" for the night. In the back parking lot of the motel,we saw a bus parked. On the side of it,we saw,"The Maynard Ferguson Orch." (or "Band"). I was hoping to meet him,but it was already too late. By the time we got up the next day,the bus was gone.
Saw him at the Watertown (Tn.) Jazz fest a few years back. Albeit,he liked his "juice",(according to a band member) he packed the place,& gave everybody their money's worth. He was, then,in his early 70's. Rest easy Maynard.
