I've read a ton of arguments about "what is country". I've started writing and recording again. My last two songs sound country to me.

Do these fit your criteria for country? If not, why?
I have several more tunes I'm working on. All of them country IMHO. One of them is a country shuffle.
Any other song writers hanging out here?

Having listened to Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
last night,
it immediately sprung to mind.
But I also hear Trafic, Steve Winwood
and Workingmans Dead in the mix.
And Linda Rhondstat style production too.
This is country for me.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 08 June 2006 at 08:30 AM.] |

I listened to a couple of your songs, and being somewhat of a traditionalist, I'd be more apt to label them as NCS or Country-Rock than I would to call them "Country". That's not a put-down, but my genre definitions for country and bluegrass are much narrower than most peoples'.
I feel that as a songwriter, you have to do what you like, and what you're most comfortable with. Your material seems quite contemporary, and very much in step with what's selling today. |

Hey guys, I really appreciate the feedback.
I really enjoy writing and recording. I think I enjoy this more than gigging. I have so many tunes to record... and so little time!
I am heavily influenced by NRPS, The Byrds, the Dead, along with my all time favorite... Buck Owens. That organ patch really does sound like an old Stevie Winwood track now that I listen I guess this is simply a product of my listening years ago.
Over the years, I've found that many pedal steelers are pretty complex musically... This makes me think that there are probably quite a few songwriters in our community.
I would love to hear other folks stuff as well.

Continuing in the same context, Lonesome Wind (my newest tune) is perhaps more "alternative country"? A good friend of mine thought that this tune hinted of "Pure Prarie League". I dont' know. I just write and the song comes out. I tried to tell a story in this tune.
