I'm trying to gather info for a website about great string players past and present in all genres. My Snob site!
By this I mean, and please don't take this as a putdown by any means...for instance I won't mention J.Garcia as a steel player or Tinsley Ellis as a guitar player. Example...Hollywood Fats as opposed to Clapton. Once again no "put down", its just that everyone knows about Clapton and few outside of musicians have heard Hollywood. I'd especially be interested in the great unknowns or lesser known. Also unsigned independent artist who may have material available.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate you posting here or emailing me with any info or url link to artist. I will link to artist who have websites or include "contact info" for those that have cds for mailorder.
Acoustic, electric, steel, dobro, fiddle, mandolin, heck even banjer pickers. Any string pickers!

Hamilton De Holanda,
whom Mike Marshall thinks is a killer mandolin player.
I agree 110%, but most outside of Brazil don't know of him.
I played with them both.
Never seen anyone play like Ham.
The lead guitarist for the Time Jumpers is quite hot.
Alan Donson, a brilliant american guitarist
living in europe,
mostly Poste Restante Amstredam.
He turned down Return To Forever,
leaving the job to Al De Meola.
I was in Larry Coryell's dressing room with Alan.
He asked for Larry's guitar,
and was hand it without question,
while Larry talked with friends.
I watched as Larry tried NOT to
look at what Alan was playing,
but was having a hard time doing it...
I have seen the Johns ;
Scofield, Abrecrombie and McGlauflin
address him by 1st name at THEIR gigs,
during the same period as the Coryell show,
and same for Alan Holdsworth.
He rarely records, and only his stuff his way.
And most people can't follow it..
so he remains little known except to heavy hitters.
Also in France Tchavalo Schmitt from Alsace region.
Increadible manouche style playing.

I recommend Alex DePue, a world-class fiddler/violinist, now living in Philadelphia. He comes by it naturally: all 3 of his brothers are also world-class violinists, two of them in the Philadelphia Orchestra. Prodigious talent.

what I'M snobbing is the mainstream, so as not to be confusing in the post title. i'm for promoting the late greats and the hard working and non-working, non-conforming, unheard, unknown musicians. |

I am giving a link to Chuck Hall,,a truely GREAT blues guitarist..plays mostly here in the Phoenix area with occasional trips to Sweden.
He works in the marketing dept. at Fender.
I've known him for 16 years playing with his trio and have NEVER heard him screw up..a great song writer also.

James Harmon told me the pic on the cover of his (Hollywood Fats') HouseRockin' CD was not only one of the very rare times he ever played a strat on stage, but was from the night he died!
One of the true great blusers and with such pathetic few examples available to prove it.
