I understand that a genuine vintage pickup might possibly give you a genuine vintage sound, just like your hero's. But a genuine vintage PICKGUARD SCREW?!? What makes the old ones better, are they "screwier" somehow? Don't the slots on old screws get worn out and loosened up?
I also understand that you can take a no-name 'oriental' pickup and bury it in your yard for a few weeks, and then dig it up and sell it as a genuine "vintage" pickup. It's a good thing Ebay has such a diligent fraud policy - whew.[This message was edited by b0b on 05 June 2006 at 11:42 AM.] |

Having dealt with car afficianados, I can assure you that most afficianados get to know their hardware very well. When judging a concourse '63 Corvette, for instance, those chosen to judge cars at shows and events know exactly what kinds of bolts and washers were used in every place on the vehicle! (So don't try to use Ford Mustang oil-pan screws on your Corvette!) In guitars, the same would hold true; for screws, they know exactly what kind of plating and exactly what length, what kind of threads, and what head shape to look for.
Is this being "excessive"? Probably not, especially when you consider how obsessed some of us get with something not nearly as tangible, such as the "tone" of a certain brand of guitar. |

I remember at the old Telecaster Forum (TDP), before it closed and reopened as the TDPRI, a collector by the name of "Old Fuzzy" posted pictures of various Tele Pickguard screws.
He was quite serious, noting the bevel angle, thread count, etc.
I'm a player, not a collector, so I don't get it, but if it's important to them, I'm happy for them.
I'm sure he doesn't care which lever I lower my Es on either. |
