Do any oldtimers (like me) remember a song on the pop charts about '62 or '63 sang in Japanese I think, it was really pretty. Do you remember the title? I think it would sit nice on the pedal steel. I am trying to find sheet music, but need a title. |

I had the sheet music for this song a few years ago. It’s written in the key of C. The music is simple and pretty. For the chords check This Page
This song has a great 50s/60s vibe, and the Japanese lyrics and production give it a different twist. It takes me back to 1963, and it reminds me of Beatlemania because this was a big hit just before the Beatles broke in America.
Below is the first line of the melody (notes), as I remember it. My mind is a little cloudy now… it’s almost 4:00am, just got home from a gig… thanks for the memory!

PS: Translated Lyrics
I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall
Remembering those happy spring days
But tonight I'm all alone
I look up when I walk, counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those happy summer days
But tonight I'm all alone
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I'm all alone
whistling
Remembering those happy autumn days
But tonight I'm all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up when I walk so the tears won't fall
Though my heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I'm all alone

"Anoko No Namaeyewa, Nontenkaena"
I have the record somewhere, I'm guessing at the spelling, but that's close. (That song isn't as good as the "A" side.) Kyu was killed in a commercial plane crash in '85. |

Man! THAT's a trivia question if ever I've heard one... Kinda like "What was on the flip side of "They're Coming to Take Me Away"... |

I worked in Japan for six months in '88, the people there thought it funny that they renamed the song "Sukiyaki" when that had nothing to do with the song. It was renamed because they thought most Americans had heard the word, and might listen to it. I loved the song.

I thought the flip side was Boku No Hoshi. This is a beautiful song I used to do in a Hawaiian band. Maybe it was an "A" side. |

The 45 I have of "Sukiyaki" has "China Nights" (real name "China No Yoru") as the flipside.
It dates back to at least the early 1950's. We used to sing it as "She Ain't Got No Yo-Yo" when I was a kid in Japan in 1953-54. |

I have read somewhere that the American (Capital?) record company didnt like the Japanese title, so they chose somewhat cathy Japanese word Sukiyaki. They misspelled as Sukiyaka on the record label though. I like China Nights as well as Sukiyaki. [This message was edited by Kunihiko Suzuki on 04 June 2006 at 11:04 PM.] |
