I do apologise for hijacking Jim Gorrie's posting about Ricky and his beautiful playing on "Farewell Party "it's just that I had no idea how to send that link from one place to another, and this was the only way I could bring this brilliant playing to the attention of other members, mind you, I think Ricky himself would be most impressed with this young talent, isn't he something else. Thanks Jim for putting up the link. Nearly five million hits has to say something!Check him out and be impressed big time!!

James, no apology necessary.
That is one mind blowing video, and for anyone who hasn't watched it yet, here is the link > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjA5faZF1A8
It runs for 5 mins 20 secs and it's worth every one of its' 320 seconds.
There isn't a steel guitar in sight, but that shouldn't make a difference ~ this is sheer brilliance.

He's really not that good. All that distortion is used to cover up his mistakes and make him sound better than he is!

I saw that video a few weeks ago and read some of the comments. Apparently, he is merely copying a version already recorded by a known guitarist.

I wonder how many can "merely copy" that as well?

Talented kid.

Try as I may, I'm probably not to be found guilty of this yet... Someday though!

I think the implication is that he arranged it. If so, he would be amazing. If he just learned the piece from a recording it would be pretty good. As far as speed goes, you have to be born with it.

http://www.jerryc.co.uk/

There are about 40 versions of guys covering this tune on this web page. Also the backing track is available (with tab)..

Let's see, where did I leave that Big Muff????

Hi Bill, yeah, I checked out that link and now I'm not so impressed. As Basilh pointed out anyone can play and copy like that- given enough time and tab.I feel cheated!

The video of the guy who (apparently) came up with this specific arrangement - jerryc - was discussed in this thread about a month ago - http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum10/HTML/201472.html

Personally, I prefer guitar90's version. I listened to several of the web versions linked - this blows all the ones I heard away, IMO. This guy has good tone (if you like that kind of tone - I do, in its appropriate place), good feel for that style, and really executes most of these runs and arpeggios very cleanly. I don't hear him using distortion to hide anything. His guitar is mixed way out front, the few real issues are obvious.

The guys who aspire to the Randy Rhoads, Yngvie Malmsteen tradition focus on these classical pieces like this. Listen to Uli John Roth's version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons if you like this kind of thing - that's commercially available, anything by Yngvie Malmsteen, and so on.

Finally, if you think this is so easy, get yourself a metal guitar with a set of hot humbuckers and Floyd Rose system, a distortion amp, and have at it. There are plenty of metal guys that can play like this, but it's not easy - they are very dedicated and practice a lot. Remember also that these guys are very young amateur guitarists.

I'd honestly love to see a web site with 40-50 pedal very young steel players trying to outdo each other on Pachelbel's Canon. Somehow, I don't think it's going to happen.

Dave, I agree, this is by far the best version of them all, fluid, and flawless! His guitar is also in tune unlike two of the other players featured. Mind you, even if I could play guitar I wouldn't get anywhere near as good these guys.I can only get up to half speed on Paul Franklin's speed picking!

I liked this Guitar 90 guy's version the best too, I think it's even better than the original by this JerryC cat IMO. He's certainly a talented musician. On the other hand some of the other versions are just 'playing the notes', not much real feel.

BTW, I had no intention of knocking the time and talent it takes to work up that stuff, it ain't easy, tab or no, but I would agree with DLD. This kid may not have been out of his room in years..
