And he is in a bit of a Django mood!

Hope I am still breathing O2 at his age.

Very nice.

Always like watching Les play (never seen it live, though)

It's even more remarkable whe you consider all the fingers in both his hands went through surgery for arthritis at one point.

Still lyrical after all these years. I hope I'm still playin' too when I'm his age.

One of the most wonderful musical experiences I've had in decades. THANK YOU for the tip-off!

One thing I couldn't help but notice is that his fabulous rhythm section and the guitarist with all of those great chord changes........were seemingly out of uniform in today's world. Not only did he look neat and clean, short hair and all, but he fully knew more than three chords, but, how did he manage all of this fine acommpaniment without having his guitar hanging down to his ragged knees and not drowning out Les with his raggedy twang!
And Les, with his changing of picking areas for tone and finger vaibrato was capped off nicely at the end of the first tune with a subtle BIGBSY VIBRATO on that last chord. So simple, so nice, so classy.

Les is an original character. He loves that echo and Bigsby, doesn't he?

There's a tendency on the part of jazz guitar players to all sound alike- they all want to be Kenny Burrell or Jim Hall. Nothing wrong with that, but you often can't tell one player from another. For example, I heard a "purist" say the other day, "you don't bend strings in jazz". Les does! In fact, he may have "invented" it.

That was wonderful and did my ol' heart and ears good! I wonder how old that video is? Isn't Les around 90 now and I'll bet that's pretty recent does anyone know or did I miss the date some where?

Thanks Rick, Les Paul gets my vote for guitar player who makes me least miss steel. I'm not sure why that is so, but it is.

What's the name of that tune he's playing? I'll bet Hatcher knows.

I would love to know what all those switches on his guitar do.

Ya'll are welcome. I wish I could find some more to share with you. I've watched it several times, and that really is one of the coolest performances I've seen in recent years. I wish more young kids could be exposed to that level of musicianship and guitar playing.

Peace,

Rick

There's a famous Jazz At The Philharmonic live concert LP from the 40s with Les, a bunch of horn players and Nat King Cole on Piano. Les Paul's solo on that tune was very well known among guitar players for both his chops and sense of musical humor. If memory serves, he even quotes from that solo in the clip above.

In fact, I see that you can get a used copy on Amazon for less than ten bucks: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000056V1D/qid=1140647486/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/102-5837023-0814517?n=5174

Nuages is one of Django Reinhardt's best known and best loved compositions. It's French for Clouds. Everyone from the current crop of Gypsy guitarists to folks like Willie Nelson and Manhattan Transfer have had a go at it.

Andy, my ignorance of Django Rheinhardt is a gaping hole in my musical education, and there's no excuse for it. If I were to buy some of his music, where would you suggest that I start?

So, are you any relation to Phil "Fang" Volk?

Ditto what Ray and others say about this outstanding backup band. And Les is always superb.

As close as I came to knowing Les and Mary, was meeting Mary's sister in Southern California. It turns out that Mary and her sister were gospel singers in their younger years.

By the way what ever happened to Mary?

Aloha,
Don

Rick - thanks a million for that Les Paul video. It takes 1 1/4 hours to download it on this machine and I usually get to these things late when the phone is not busy. Tonight is the night and I have played it over and over. Absolutely marvellous stuff. He always had humour in his music if you pick up on it. I look at what he does and think " if only. " Ah well! Back to the drawing board. Much appreciated.

I loved Les and Mary together, unfortunately they divorced long ago, and Mary passed away at a pretty young age. I had some of those old 45s that had 2 songs on each side, of the Les Paul Trio. I lost all my records in a divorce, those were wonderful. By the way, Roy Thomson posted a beautiful solo version of Nuages on the No Peddlers forum not too long ago. Maybe it's still available?
