I visited the Museum of Modern Art last weekend and wandered into the the most amazing musical exhibit I've ever heard!
Picture an empty room the size of a basketball court except for 40 speakers on stands about ear height, all in a row, placed in an oval pattern.
The music was a 16th century choral work (Thomas Tallis) with 40 voices (no instruments) with each voice coming out of its own individual speaker.
It was run by banks of computers and amplifiers so that the voices would come out of some speakers when that part of the chorus was singing, then other ones, etc.
It was an other worldly experience.
Surround sound x 1000!
Here's an article about it: http://www.therestisnoise.com/2006/01/spem_in_moma_re.html

Yes, I heard this at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa a couple of years ago. Such a simple concept, in a way, but what a result.! Here's to Janet Cardiff (although I understand it was her husband who did the setup.)
If you get a chance to hear this, don't miss it.

Hmmm, Mike....... 40 steel guitars ? Isn't that the little know 6th circle, upper level of Dante's "The bemused and annoyed" ?

Hurry up, Bob, it's only there until Mar21.
But it does raise some interesting possibilities about using that technique to other types of music.
Why can't there be a CD recordings that isolates one instrument to one channel andnothing else?
Regular surround sound seems to use the rear speakers only as peripherals, not as main channels.
It'd be like sitting in the middle of a 4 piece (or more, according to how many speakers you have) band!
