I was listening to Dick Smothers interview on Bob Edwards' XM show this am on the way to work.
They played a mid '60's clip of a parody they did of the Kingston Trio's big folk hit "Tom Dooley" , with Tom Smothers pronouncing it "Tom Doodley" and singing it in off-the-beat timing worthy of Willie Nelson..
Right at the end, after singing "Hang down your head Tom Doodley" about 12 times, Tommy Smothers sings the last line as "Hang down your head TOM BRUMLEY"!!!!
I about drove off the road ....

Don't let anybody fool you, those two guys have been paying attention for a long time and they can really play if and when they want to. |

I used to love the Smothers Brothers. They really were very good folkies... but you rarely heard it, due to the comedy. |

I will still sometimes quote their version of Streets of Laredo,
"If you get an outfit, You'll be a cowboy too"

Always loved Tommy's Guild. Maybe a D-47 or D-50 Guild [older Guild designations]. Sunburst.
And under the bright stage lighting, you could tell ole' Tom didn't fuss much with
Martin & Co. Guitar Polish or Lemon Pledge.
Where'd all those great shows [and people]
go? Sure do miss it. |

They're local here in Sonoma County. They own a Volvo dealership and a winery.
Pat Paulson died a few years back. He also owned a winery nearby. I still have an old bottle of "Pat Paulson Refrigerator White" around here somewhere. Probably vinegar by now.

Played a show at Smothers Theatre on Pepperdine U in Malibu last year and wondered if the Brothers had anything to do with the naming of it -
There's a swell documentary out on DVD on The Smothers Brothers Show called "Smothered".
