For the first time, after 4 years of owning it, I've apparently arrived at a point in my PSG progress---doing a lot of A6 and B6 playing on the Universal 12---where I'm ready to actually enjoy and play my '54 26" D8 Stringmaster---what was baffling and inpenetrable up to now is incredibly fun and gratifying all of a sudden (and baffling and inpenetrable). Which is all beside the point.
The question---do I pack it in the case face down, like my PSG, ready to receive its legs? This guitar has the round tuner heads and I worry about damage. |

Jon Michael is correct...however I never placed my guitars face down..I like to open the case and see the beauty. Its the rule and Im the exception to the rule..it dont really matter but as Michael stated it makes more sense the put the legs in while backside
up. I just dont like to have to have the backside of anything staring at me I have a complex.. |

I carry my Stringmasters face down, but have learned to put a small hand towel over the guitar before I close the case--that way, if the legs happen to come loose during transit, they won't scratch the axe--it's happened to me! I'm mainly speaking of the older tweed cases where the legs fit in the lid.

I carry my Stringmaster face up when I go out. That's because I usually end up face down at the end of the night... [This message was edited by HowardR on 14 February 2004 at 05:32 PM.] |

I've never considered it a real problem either way, as far as any damage to the tuning gears, because; the case doesn't remain lying flat anyway. So, when you are packed up you usually stand the case with the handle up anyway! The biggest problem, if any; is to keep it from falling flat! I usually try to stand it against a wall or between my amp and my pac-a-seat. [Just to play it safe] This is true of a lot of instrument-cases. It's something a musician learns to live with in one wy or another. What bothers me is a guitar-player that opens the case, removes the guitar and walks away, with the case lying there open on the floor, for someone to stumble over! Clumbsey-Me!

Yeah, John. I never play anyplace big enough that leaving a case lying around is even an option but at home I have encountered another problem that is a quite compelling reason to close and stand up the case---two cats with weak stomachs. I just cleaned cat barf off of my Fender tweed SM case yesterday. Not talking about a hairball here. A full load of half digested cat chow. I thanked the barf gods that I had only left it lying flat, not open.
Sorry if I caught anyone in the middle of breakfast.

I never put any guitar face down.
It's just as easy to put the steels (lap and pedal) on their sides when installing legs. This works on the models I own, anyway (Fender lap, Carter steel). |

Jon - Not a dumb question at all...how would you know if you didn't ask? I puzzled over the same thing when I got my T8 and finally decided it must go face down, in case the legs came loose from their slots (which has happened) and started banging around on the tuners and other parts on the top. I was pretty sure this is the intended way to pack the Stringmaster in it's case, and now Jody has verified it. There's no better authority on all things Fender.

My 1956 D8 Stringmaster has the knife-style selector swith fitted with a "top hat" knob. Because that top hat sticks up higher than anything else I put the guitar face up in the case. Turning it upside down does not seem like the thing to do. |

Bob,
I know just what you mean...I recently had a T-8 with the Tele 3 way switch ( that's what I call it ) and it was shipped face down...When I openned it up , the switch was bent over ..
I pack it differently after seeing that ..Jim |
